IT seems that it doesn't actually play mp3's... it plays mp3's converted to ATRAC. Sounds like PITA.maybe I'm paranoid... but the less things actively talking to other things over the net the better... why would I want this thing to say hello to some Sony server out there from time to time?

According to C|NET (who I do trust for some things), it actively converts everything to ATRAC3 to load onto the device.I like the idea of minidiscs, but the format is a horrible one. Here's the C|Net review of it. Consider picking up an Archos, or one of the Creative Labs Nomad's..

yo guys, heres the deal. The ipod has been out for a while. Although it could use so improvments (color screen, video support, camera, etc), it still works great. and apple has always been good about not messing up your preferences/ files. In my opinon, especially with the new price drop, the ipod is the best bet. Not that the Sony wouldn't work or anything, but the ipod is so stable and well thought out. I mean, either way, you are spending alot of money. i think you shouid spend it with something that's reliable. Anyways, good luck.
