Who would win in this race...

A friend of mine at work and another coworker have been arguing about which would win in a drag race. His new Subaru STI with an intake mod or her husbands 89 Corvette with engine mods to the tune of 460 HP. The Corvette has an Automatic Transmition. They have been debating over this for a few weeks now, and unfortunatly the STI owner is moving to KC in a few days and the Corvette owner lives in a town 40 miles away. There is no good place to race here (ie tracks) and with the risk of a ticket or worse looming this race will probably never take place. Just wanting your thoughts on how this race would end up.

I don't know about the subie, but 460 HP makes a pretty strong argument for the vette

ok ok ok....hold on. Somethings that you should keep in mind.... this is a 89 vette (stock is 240hp). Now you will have to do the math but the way i see it, a unichip, aluminum heads, intake and exhaust do not add up to 460 hp. I am pretty sure that this car is NOT a twin turbo. STi is all wheel drive (Potenza tires) ... vs rear wheel drive automatic.... And by the way the VETTE owner is afraid to race..... I can accept defeat if need be..I will believe the 460hp when I see a dyno sheet just my $.02And yes I am the friend with the STi in question.

A stock STI has 300 HP and 300 FP/T with the modded intake probably around 310 HP. The Vette has 240 HP and 375 FP/T out of the factory. At least according to a Corvette website. And it should be '89 vette not a '98 Vette.

Subie all the way! It has more power, less weight, and it's all wheel drive. (And being Japanese doesn't hurt either ^^)Also, interesting side-note: Subaru is Japanese for "The Seven Sisters" which is a constellation. This relation to the name can be seen on the Subaru logo.

I would have to say Vette, but it would be close. I never knew Japanese was a performance mod, I guess it acts like the R stickers.

The only real test would be to race, but it sounds like that isn't going to happen, so I suppose it really doesn't matter. You both would win (or the anti-racers would say you both would lose if you raced )I would have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those meddling kids.

RedLava didn't say " unichip, aluminum heads, intake and exhaust" were his only mods. 460hp from a SBC is definately possible.A stock 89 vette came with a 350ci, tuned port induction. The stock T.P.I. will not allow that much hp, but they can be modified, or a different intake put on. I've extracted about as much hp as you're gonna get from a tpi intake. 310hp, 390tq.

It is a guy in his late 50's who knows quite a bit about automobiles. I see no reason why he would lie about something like this to somebody he has never met before about something as trivial as this. The man's wife and I are good friends and her husband isn't one of those people who would make stuff up or get his facts wrong, especially about cars!My opinion was that if the Vette is everything that it has been made out to be and the driver doesn't spin the wheels at the start he would probably win just because of the large gap between the two performance wise. It would be a good close race though. If the Vette lost traction for a good second or two at the beginning he might not be able to catch up to the STI.

My buddy just traded his STI for a 250 HP Legacy 2.5, which I drove last week. It launches like a slingshot, with zero wheel spin. He says that even with another 50 HP the STI did the same. Based on this, I'd say the STI would be faster to 60, but if the 'Vette really did have 460 HP and decent tires, it would be about 2 seconds quicker and 10 MPH faster in the 1/4 mile.

If the Vette does indeed have 460 HP, I would say it will win. A chip and intake do not equal 460 HP, it would have to be a built 283 Stroker to get 460. The Subi will take the Vette off the line for obvious reasons. Now being a 98 Vette owner, I have seen a Subi street race run against a 2002 Z06 Vette on Video. The Subi owner launched the car, mashing the gas, dumped the clutch, hitting the Rev limiter and took the Z06 off the line. The Subi was also not all stock and I think the Z06 was.

Vette all the way. The STi would beat him off of the line (if the owner drove it like he stole it), but the Vette would catch up real quick and smoke him like a cheap cigar, especially with even a low estimate of 400HP (easy to get with a 383 L98). The auto tranny will also help in drag racing.

No idea, I just know that Subaru translated is the name of that constellation.

Just came across the Road Test Summary in a recent Road & Track. They show the WRX STi as 0-60: 4.9; 1/4 mile in 13.3 @ 103.0 and a '04 Z06 Corvette as 0-60: 4.4; 1/4 mile in 12.7 @ 115.2

Besides the half second difference, the Vette is going 12MPH faster, clearly showing its superior power. I got my Cobra timed once, and 0-60 was 5.2, but I ran a 13.6@102, showing that while my start stunk (relatively speaking), once I hooked up, she pulled real good.
