Gotta stop being bored...

You might've seen my thread about putting a Rio MP3 Reciever in my bathroom...well..i've gone an extra step. That's right, a 7" LCD monitor opposite from the toilet. Hooked up to the second output of my DishNetwork 522 reciever. It's independantly controlled through a UHF remote, and can access any of my recorded shows. Has speakers built in, and looks great! I used some Cat5e cable to run power, video, and mono audio. (Yes, all that over one Cat5 cable.) I used one pair for + voltage, one for - voltage, one for vid, and one for audio. There's a slight ghost in the image, but it's barely noticable. There's a switch on the power cord at the screen to turn it on and off.Why you ask? Well..I was bored, and it's -my- apartment, so nobody can tell me NOT to do it!

And close up.. Yes, it's upside-down, there's a switch on the back that flips the image.

Nah..like I said, boredom! The MP3 player in there is for music in the shower, and with three people in the apartment (me, my fiancee, and a friend), we get enough use out of the shower. The screen was just because I had it sitting around, and...hey, it was a neat little project!Just load up on Sealab 2021 and AquaTeen Hunger Force, and i'm set!

I have a 14" LCD sitting around that I need to do something with.. Thought about putting that where the Video screen is, but figured the LCD Monitor might not like the condensation..We shall see...

I would assume 12v, but I could very easily be mistaken.

12v DC. I was worried about the Cat5 not being able to handle the current, so I used the Brn, Brn/Wht for negative, and Grn, Grn/Wht for Positive, twisted together. It seems to handle it well.. It's about a 30 foot run, and surprisingly, it travels the video extremely well.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the total cost of the project? I'm kind of liking it and thinking of doing something similar

Actually...I'm not even sure what the screen cost. I managed to trade it for some computer gear with a friend in college. This particular screen takes composite input with a 1/8" mini-plug. I have a converter from RCA to 1/8" that goes right in. Plus stereo audio in an 1/8" plug. Here's something on eBay that might do the job:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...&rd=1I was going to run stereo audio to it, but I figured there was no reason to. I just summed the audio inputs by tying both L + R center connections together, and sending it down a pair of the Cat5.I don't think the screen draws too much power, and it's not too long a distance, so i'm hoping it won't burn up anything. I contemplated throwing a 1 amp fuse in-line with the power supply, just to make sure it wouldn't melt anything, but I haven't yet..Any screen that takes 12v would work in this case. Of course..you don't need to throw power down the Cat5 if you don't want to. I just did it because the bathroom power outlets were already filled, and across the room, so it was just cleaner to run it this way.
