Gmail?

So who's got it? Who wants it? Whats the big deal anyway? I have it, but I'm not sure why its such a hot commodity. They're selling invitations on Ebay for it because its in Beta version only right now. Anyone know when it becomes available for everyone?

I have it too. It's pretty cool really. The great part of it is the storage capability. I've used it to transfer files that I would otherwise be unable to email and I've had people send me large attachments that I would not normally have been able to receive. That and the search capability. It's quite the service. I don't know when it becomes available to everyone, but I wouldn't imagine it will be too much longer.

I thought I read it was October time frame. I think the reason people want it so badly (besides storage) is to get the name that they want and not have a bazillion numbers stuck on the end of the name because all the rest are taken. I think a lot of people will switch from yahoo and hotmail. Speaking of Yahoo, I now have to access my Rogers cable email through Yahoo mail instead of the Rogers webmail page. It sucks.

Ahh. Hadn't thought of it from a username perspective. That does make sense though. I agree, I think MSN and Yahoo will lose a lot of users to Google. The part that will really hurt is that it could affect their paying customer base as well.Wow, I wasn't aware of any merger with Rogers and Yahoo. That's interesting. It could be worse though, Yahoo's interface is pretty good for the mass webmail services.

Yeah I guess Yahoo isn't bad interface wise. I liked the simplicity of Rogers webmail though. And my Rogers website is going kaput too in Jan 2005 and I'll have to move all that over to geocities. I think I'm not going to bother. I'll get my brother to host it for me.I'm not able to send invitations to gmail to my brother (who desperately wants one). How does google decide who gets to get an invitation?

Yes, simplicity is a good thing. I definitely would not recommend Geocities. I think avoiding them is a REALLY good plan. As for the invitation thing, I didn't think they restricted who you sent an invite to. I've sent them to a couple of people and haven't been restricted so far.

Sorry, not that they restricted who I send the invitation to, but how do I get google to let me invite people? I'm not able to invite anyone right now.

Ahh. It seems to depend on how much you use your account, how many contacts you have, etc. One of my friends that I sent an invite to wound up with 6 invites within the first couple weeks. I noticed that once I started using it more, I actually got more invitations. Speaking of, I have two invitations remaining. If you want, I can send him one.

I got a gmail account, and used to to grab a particular username, and then got six invitations. sent a couple out, used one for a relatively anonymous username (some low life already had "joatmon") now list gmail address in my profile hereDon't really need another email address, I have a domain hosted and it gives me 100 email accounts,I use one for my "real" email account but sometimes the free ones like gmail are good for things where you think spammers might be listening. I gave my son an invite, and he spent hours trying to find a username that wasn't already taken, so it's getting late in the game for unique usernames without digits on the end.I think google is cutting back on the number of invites they give.

I had no plans of switchign to Gmail, but I very well might if they ever offer POP access via OE...I've been with yahoo for years, and now, all of a sudden, I'm getting inundated with spam, and HATING it!!!!!!

Given that their claim to fame is the ability to easily search 1GB of mail, I don't see there ever being POP access (somewhat to my dismay). I normally loath webmail, but I have found Gmail to be a very friendly, functional interface. I am, so far, really impressed.

Yeah I normally despise web based email, but I use it to check Rogers from work because we can't install software on our computer thats not work related. I use POP mail at home though.

Makes sense. I use my web based ones at work just to keep the paper trail to a minimum. Even though I'm in charge of what goes on with the machines, I don't like to leave some conversations exposed to potentially prying eyes.

I have a Gmail account and really don't use it. But I got my user name . I also have a hotmail and a yahoo account. But for real emails that I send to people, I don't really like to use web based mail. I prefer a Pop account or the like.

I was going to invite some of you that requested it, but not available at the present time.Google mail help: As we make way for more accounts, we may periodically allow you to invite others to join Gmail. When we do so, you will see an invitation link in your inbox.

Yeah I don't have the ability to invite anyone either at this time. I read somewhere that google's not sending out anymore invites, but I don't know how true it is.

When I go to log into gmail it occassionally says that I must have the browser set to allow javascript and cookies. Anyone else get this? Because I get it somewhat randomly.

I don't get that error on gmail, but I have had it on another forum when using Mozilla. I have had a few times when it comes up with the loading screen and stops there. I suppose to that may be a similar issue since the login is java. One question, do you use the "Do not ask for my password" option ever? That might cause the error.

Well, I wonder if for some reason they are triggering IE into another security mode. You might try adding them to your trusted sites zone in Internet Options, security tab. Click on trusted sites, then the sites button and click add site.

Trusted sites didn't work... not sure what the issue is. It works when I'm at work with no problems, and works occassionally at my home desktop but has never worked on the laptop.

Might just need to adjust the security level then. Javascript or cookies may, in fact, be disabled on your laptop. Mine works find on medium security, that seems to be good. I wonder though, after the big virus scare a couple of weeks ago, did Javascript get disabled on that browser? That was recommended as one solution to avoiding the virus.

Some people have bad feelings about gmail, because it parses your mail and gives you little google ads targeted using the content of ndividual emails. There is serious potential for privacy issues there. There's even
http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/but really, you have the potential for privacy compromise on any email provider that you do not personally administer.

I would say this would be more risky with a small ISP than gmail. For example, at work, we have our service through a small local ISP. I have had problems with their spam filter and when I call to locate a lost message, he can read back the full text of the message. We're one of maybe 100 clients that this ISP has. That puts the individual privacy risk up pretty high. When you're talking about a service that will have millions of subscribers, the chances are much lower. I, personally, am not concerned about my privacy. For one, if anyone is that interested in my emails, I pity them. They have so little in their life that I'm glad I can give them some entertainment.

I've been to the gmail is too creepy website. Privacy and email doesn't really concern me. I kinda feel like millster about it. If they're bored enough to be reading my email, then I hope they enjoy! Anything thats private enough that I don't want people reading, doesn't go in an email. Especially with work email!

I dunno...I'm at the point where I am going in circles. I've had yahoo for 3-4 years, which by my standards, it long for an email address. ALL my accounts have that address listed, everyone and their mother that I know and like have it.But Yahoo's spam blocker lately seems to be working in reverse -- every time I block and report spam, I seem to get DOUBLE the spam the next day! I'm really getting fed up with it. I do like POP3 access, not sure why though. THinking back in my head, it was likely due to space limitations. Now that gmail is offering a gig, that's pretty impressive, and I"ll likely give it serious consideration. My iggest beef with offline mail software, mainly, IE, is that I tend to reformat/reload about once every 3-4 months. My computer starts crashing, or whatver reason, I like clean installs. When things get cluttered, I don't uninstall. I wipe the slate clean, and start over. The last time I did this, abotu 3 weeks ago, OE f'ed up when it imported my old mail, and deleted ALL of it. That's right. A good 3 years of mail. I lost receipts, username/password e-mails, and lots of e-mails with GM part numbers waiting to be added to my list...So now I'm using yahoo on the web (looking for a single clue that will tell me how to undo OE's stupidity), but very ready to smash it.Then again, I have pop3 access paid for up through the next 6 months, so I guess i'm not too worried quite yet...Anyway, I received an invite to Gmail and signed up, haven't really poked around it much though...been too lazy...

Oooh yay...thanks! I'm all signed up now...I like how I can import my Outlook contacts instead of having to re-enter them all like with most web-based e-mail services. That's handy. Now to wait on them to release POP3 access or IMAP, and then I might consider a permanent switch.
