Side pipes!!!

Well, since a normal axel back exhaust is really pricey and I probably wont ever be able to get one, I came up with an idea with the help of a Neon SRT-4 I saw.Would it be possible to cut into the stock exhaust pipe about 3/4 of the way down the middle and have a custom pipe bent out to the side of the car for side pipes? The only problems I can think of is that it might get a little hot and might mess up the bottom of the car if there is not the right precautions taken to insulate the pipe. Another thing is that the pipe would be sticking out of the bottom pretty low and it probably wouldn;t be a good idea to lower it...to me, sacrificing lowering springs (that I probably wont be able to afford) for a custom sidepipe system is worth it. especially for hte sound. I know what the Vibe sounds like without a muffler and it sounds beautiful. So I was thinking custom sidepipe with a cap on the end so you can make it open header (technically) or just put the cap back on when you want it to be normal. Now you're going to have to exit on the right side because the fuel tank is blocking the left side...but does anyone see an flaws in my idea that I've over looked? Because I know for a fact this probably wont work just because it sounds too easy (removed)...

With enough money, anyhting custom can be done. As for heat, you can use heat dampening material (i work at an aviation shop, and we use some serious stuff there, so it can be solved). You can also use square tubing for the piping but it is expensive, a pain in the (removed) to bend and rarely done. Also dont forget about your undercar neon system, check the fuel and brake lines location, if those get heated up too much -- their ****ed (becasue they are rubber/plastic from what i have seen). If i was you...before the cat put an exhaust cut out, with an electronic servo motor and valve. I have seen them here and there for 100 w/o motor and it has to manually opened to 280 for the automatic. It will be sneaky, loud and fairly legal....and by pass the cat on race day.

I think the fuellines are metal..but I only glanced at them when I was repairing my reverse warning system.. The neons would definitely not like that much heat too close..and any plastic will definitely have issues..

See you MI guys can do a lot with your exhausts... others like myself in Ontario have to have certain things in there to be able to drive our cars... We have to keep the muffler there... which makes it hard for us to dual pipe our exhausts...Anything is possible if you can get away from the stupid muffler design on the Vibe.

Well here you have to have a muffler too. My friend got a ticket for having open headers on his'73 Nova. But I doubt any cop would think a Vibe is running open headers.Yeah I had the neons in mind too, I might have to sacrifice those too...Why would you want square tubing? I've never heard of that one before, just curious. And as far as that valve is concerned tell me more about it It doesn't seem like a simple bent tube welded to the exsisting pipe would be all that much, I mean, the gy with the dual exhaust at the Fenton meet only paid $200 for his system, and that includes more piping, a muffler, and exhaust tips.

You can get a cheap exhaust valve from J.C.Whitney-IIR under $40. It is hand powered by a push/pull switch you mount somewhere. The servo powered one is gonna be $$$$! They also have header wrapping tape, so maybe you can use that to keep things cool. And as far as noise-I do not understand why the cops would be ticketing someone with a loud car exhaust when they let Harleys cruise by that actually hurt ones ears-from the opposite side of the interstate!

YEA!!!! That's what I've been saying forever!!! His Nova is loud as h*ll but not near what some Harleys are! He almost got ticketed a few times. Once when I was with him, but the cop got stuck behind a minivan in the right lane so I pulled up next to him to box him in without looking like I was trying to do it. The cop tried to fly up the shoulder to catch up but my friend and the minivan both turned into a tacobell and the minivan cut the cop off almost causing an accident. HAHAHAHA

It's Vibe... not a mid-year Corvette... *roll eyes*Pete

Well, with $50 paychecks every two weeks I don't have alot to work with here...besides, what else could get you a loud half way descent exhaust sound other than dual?

What would you put in the back of the car to fill the hole in your bumper from the stock exhaust?Don't forget, the bumper is cut out to accomodate the tail pipe...would look pretty lame IMHO if there was an unexplainable nook in your bumper...

ya, i agree. after researching the diff exhausts, the magnaflow's the best by far, not only in performance, but price!

Maybe I'll try to save for Magnaflow and if I get enough I'll just build a dual off hte magnaflow.
