Has anybody else started to get popup ads on their computer advertising of all things...popup blockers? I just got one now on genvibe that actually said "The Genvibe.com recomends that you get a popup blocker from this site." or something like that. I have also just started seeing a popup that says I have adware on my computer from a scan that Yahoo did?!? Do they even offer this service?I guess I don't have a real question, I just thought it was strange that it just started seeing it a lot about two weeks ago. And for some reason the popup blocker on MSN doesn't catch them.

I'd either get FireFox, or go to downloads.com and do a search for "spybot".. download SpyBot Search & Destroy 1.3, it'll clean up your system from any spyware/adware that might be on it.

I've been using the popup blocker that is included in the Google toolbar for I.E., and it worked great up till about a month ago. I just read an article the other day that said the popup makers have found a way around most exhisting popup blockers.BUT, you should be getting no popups here on Genvibe, with exception of i.m.'s.Yes, get Spybot and run it. I'd also go to "tools" (at the top of I.E. if that's what you are using), "internet options", and delete "temporary internet files".

*EDIT* Apparently I was a little late on this post, but enjoy the info anyway, I don't want to get the repost police on my (removed). Lava, I never get any popups on this site, it sounds like you may have spyware that creates popups. If you want to get rid of spyware, there are 2 great FREE programs (I suggest if you use them and like them to donate to the authors) The first, Spybot Search and Destroy,
http://www.download.com/Spybot...t-0-2 This one will scan and remove Spyware, trojans and the like. After you install it, update it, and scan. After the scan is finished, click on the fix selected problems. The second, is Spyware Blaster, if updated regularly, it will stop spyware from being installed get it here.
http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html I have been asked this before and I will answer it before it gets asked, NO these programs are not spyware themselves, much like other "spyware removal tools". If you aren't scared about spyware enough read this, (here's the link to the whole story)
http://www.techworthy.com/Lapt...age=5 Spyware Invades! From the August 2003 Issue of LaptopYou are being watched. Not you, exactly, but your Web activity, which is almost as serious. Here’s what you should know, and how to protect yourself.Page 5 of 8Exposing the DangersSoftware that provides an appreciable benefit in exchange for ad bombardment might be annoying, but there are more nefarious applets with much more dangerous intentions. Many of the companies listed at spyware-tracking Web sites and highlighted in Ad-Aware and ZoneAlarm were not easy to locate, and none of the companies responded to attempts via e-mail and phone to contact them. In some cases, spyware applets are stealing personal data such as credit card information and using your personal information illegally. “One of the worst I’ve seen is a product called VX2 or Transponder,†said Webb. “The product goes under a variety of names. While typical spyware may collect generic usage statistics, this one transmits not only lists of sites visited, but also the user’s name and e-mail address, a list of programs the user has installed, printers, processor speed, amount of hard drive space, and memory. It even uploads a file from the user’s hard drive containing information from the computer’s OEM.†Many of the spyware applets listed at Cexx.org have been shown to cause registry problems and system crashes, often consuming precious Windows resources. Others have refused to uninstall, changing settings that force users to reinstall certain components. Gibson commented that his company “has received hundreds of reports that [the use of] OptOut (the Gibson Research spyware-tracking program) immediately repaired computer damage that had been unknowingly caused by the presence of the poorly written Aureate/Radiate utility. Spyware can definitely be harmful to more than a user’s privacy and security.â€

I also find that people will download the pop-up blocker software without really rooting out the source of the problem.. adware, spyware, etc..Definitely download AdAware and Spybot (as mentioned and others) to remove the software causing the problems. After that, a good pop-up blocker is always nice to have.
