Firefox...

Switched to Mozilla's Firefox browser a few days ago...been so many reports of security holes in IE...most recently, a flaw that records keystrokes to lift credit card numbers.Decided I was sick of it, and heard about Firefox. Have to say, it's very fast. Faster than IE. Unfortunately, it has the ugly mozilla interface similar to netscape...but i'll deal...at least until microshaft gets their act together and fixes this crap...Worth a look.Check it out here:

If you hate the interface, try changing the theme. Some of them look pretty nice. I had a lot of trouble with 0.9 installing over the top of my existing 0.8 install on my XP box at work, but once I got all the old DLLs cleared up, it's working great. Firefox is by far my favorite browser right now. Now if Mozilla could just solve the load time and stability problems on Macs, I'd be a total convert.

Not sure which load time you mean...but I find this loads pages and images a million times faster than IE did!

I mean program startup under OS X on a Mac. It takes forever starting up and the page loads are not significantly faster than Safari. I do like the selective popup blocking though. Safari's is either on or off. Anyway, my point is that on the PC Firefox is a winner, hands down. On the Mac, it has a little way to go.

Yeah, when I'm on a Windoze box I avoid IE at all costs. Browser hijacks, garbage being automagically installed, whatever other security problems that browser has... Plus, IE just can't offer features I've been using in other browsers for years that have become necessities to me without installing additional software. With no Windoze here at home, I don't have to worry about it. At work though where I have to use products created by the Evil Empire, I bring in a copy of Opera installed to my thumb drive. Above all things I need in a browser, the multiple document interface is the most important. I tend to open countless numbers of pages, and like to keep them all contained within one browser window. Really helps curb taskbar clutter by just having one instance of the browser listed and makes it much easier to switch between pages you're viewing.Next on my list is pop-up blocking... If I see a pop-up window, it is because I have requested it - not because the site thinks I need to see it.IE seems just too stripped-down compared to many of the other browsers out there. IMHO, of course.I mainly use Opera, it's fantastic. I discovered this browser back in the late 90's, and have been using it ever since. Just upgraded to 7.51 this morning. It's quite small and super fast, as it always has been. (only a 3.8 mb download for the rpm version!) It is highly configurable, plenty of skins available, built-in google search bar, nice built-in mail client. Like many of the new browsers, you can specify how Opera identifies itself, great for those sites that lock you out because you're not running IE. Offers good pop-up blocking too, but will block out GenVibe instant messages, as I discovered this week. All in all, good browser, quite stable, runs on many platforms. Generally renders pages well, with some exceptions. I've had problems with sites whose webmasters seem to think the only browser that exists is IE, and used the Microsoft "standards" to create their pages. The downside is that you've gotta pay for it, which most people aren't intersted in paying for a browser. I have bought it on several occasions and don't mind one bit. Well worth the 40 bucks. I can think of far worse things that I've spent $40 on. lol For anyone wishing to try alternative browsers, give Opera a try too!Opera aside, I'll run Konqueror, and occasionally Firefox. I agree with Millster, the Windoze version of Mozilla have always been reasonably fast. However, it seems the versions ported to *nix are way sloooow... On my fastest box, running SuSE 9.1, it takes 30 seconds from the time I launch Firefox until the browser window opens. It is better than what it was, but still I find the Linux version far too sluggish and clunky for daily use, so I stick with Opera.

Firefox isn't too bad, but I really like Opera. I actually bought it. It is well worth it, the tab browsing is awesome. Give it a free trial.

Oh cool! Have you tried Opera's fast forward button, Mr. Poopypants? I just found that if you click on a picture that someone has attached to a post (doesn't work for things linked off the forum) and hit the fast forward button, it will display the next picture in the thread. If there isn't another picture, it will bounce you back to the posts. That's just neat...

Actually...Firefox doesn't suck at tables..the problem is all the coders out there who cater to IE because it "simplifies" things and doesn't follow widely accepted coding guidelines..

Woo hoo, I just fond a portable version of Firefox that I can run directly from my USB thumb drive... This will come in handy for those who want to run a good browser that works at work, but the boss says "no, you can't install any software!" LOL! Just take it with you when you leave... ~8MB unzipped on my thumb drive.

New glitch in Firefox that's been bugging me...Seems to be a JavaScript issue...Drop down menus tend to appear way off from where they should. An example:Note the drop down menu appears ALL THE WAY on the left of the screen!Another:The menus should be left-aligned, and I find the menus keep disappearing when I try to click something on those menus...Any thoughts?I'm running the latest version (1.0).

If you have a Mac, Safari 1.2.4 is way faster than Firefox 10.1. If you don't have a Mac, maybe you're missing something!

Blah... I just checked the NJ lottery site with Firefox on Linux... I get the same thing you see. Not running that current of a version, I have Firefox 1.0 preview release. I need to upgrade! Hell, with Opera and Konqueror, I don't get the drop-downs, period. I have to click one of the headings above where the drop-down should be and go in from that way. Not sure we could do anything to make it work properly. All goes back to what I said a few months ago about those boneheads who design sites to work with the "standards" that M$ has "developed" for their lovely Internet Exploiter, and won't work right with anything else other than M$IE... Us non-M$IE guys may be only 5% of their total users (if we're lucky) but damn it, that doesn't mean we don't exist! Excuse us for wanting a modern browser with tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, unable run malicious active-x stuff, unable to get crappy spyware installed automagically... I guess we're in the wrong, for we are running browsers that are truly superior. LOL! Pretty frustrating!!!

The drop-down menus are a common problem with Firefox. More or less, it's because the people programming them only care about IE, so they don't actually write code that's universal.

Ok, a new one.Not really new, I just decided to post now...Seems that my quick links bar has a tendency to "share" icons. In other words, I have three links in a row. Gmail, GVC, and MO. For whatever reason, my GVC and MO links "adopt" the gmail icon. And the only way I can get rid of it is to delete and recreate the icon. It's REALLY irritating. Anyone else have this problem or maybe even a solution???

Haven't had that one yet, of course I don't have any favorites in that bar that actually have custom icons so that might be the reason. My quicklink bar does have a tendency to disappear at times though. I have to close the browser and reopen it and everything is normal.

I actually figured out a (temporary) fix for it...Turns out that's a known bug...but you can download an extension called Favicon picker...lets you set icons for your bookmarks...but it also lets you clear them...I just cleared the icons for those two and they reset to normal. I'm having fun with the favicon picker, though, cause what I've done is set each of my bookmarks to an icon, and gave them no title, so now I can fit twice as many quick bookmarks on my fave's bar as before!

Nice find! Quote »Ever since Internet Explorer toppled Netscape in 1998, browser innovation has been more or less limited to pop-up ads, spyware, and viruses. Over the past six years, IE has become a third world bus depot, the gathering point for a crush of hawkers, con artists, and pickpockets.hahaha! Very well put.

Just got my first pop-up ever with Firefox 1.0... This is on the Portable version I use at work (have to use windoze 2000 here.) (removed)? They've been disabled, only site I allow popups is this site, so I can get IM's.. Sure enough though, ended up with a damn Hotbar ad. I've read a few Mac forums here lately when I've been doing research on my new baby, they've had similar experiences as well. Anybody else? Screw it, if the genuises that come up with this crap that Opera and Firefox can't block, I'll switch to Lynx.

Since joatmon already bumped the thread... I finally downloaded Firefox the other day, but I guess I need to find a brushed metal skin to make it match Safari or something...because that white is messing with my head after having used Safari for a couple of years. I like the idea of being able to allow popups from particular web sites, so I don't have to turn the blocker on and off all the time to be sure I get my GVC IMs. I really just wish they'd add that feature to Safari though! Other than that one thing, I really have no complaints with Safari...so I'd rather just keep using it, but turning the blocker on and off is really annoying too...decisions decisions. A lot of the rendering problems people experience with "alternative browsers" are really not bugs in the other browser, but rather the result of IE's bugs allowing sloppy coding, and, as the Colonel said earlier in this thread, creating a "new" standard that really isn't standard at all. Cascading Style Sheets are one of the worst things IE will let people code sloppily...you can look at a site in IE and it will be beautiful, then look at it in any other browser and it's completely unrecognizable and unreadable. Then when I send an e-mail to the owner of the site, inevitably I will be told I should just go buy a Dell and use IE. My parents use IE and Windows XP, and I think maybe I need to start breaking Dad into Firefox or something, because the last time I ran SpyWare doctor on their computer, it had more than 500 spyware programs on it.

Hmm...looks like a good candidate for a replacement dock icon! I finally was able to get my bookmarks imported from Safari into Firefox, by enabling Safari's debug menu in Terminal. That's a pretty useful looking little menu...not sure why they didn't just put the "Export" function in the main part of the program though...would have been nice. Oh well, it was easy enough to enable myself; just one line of code and it was done.Just scooted Firefox over into Safari's slot on the dock and "poofed" Safari for now...I'll scope out Safari 2 whenever I get Tiger, but for right now, this looks a lot more customizable and is every bit as fast.

Cool! Say, how does one get that special debug menu? I'm guessing you had to drop to the terminal in order to fire up Safari using a command line switch? I'm interested to see what all is in there. Firefox ain't half bad on the mac! I hated it under linux, it was too dang clunky and sluggish. Better than the old Mozilla by far, but still the speed left a lot to be desired. Certainly runs better on the mac, that's for sure! Now that we have you running Firefox, you need to check out some of the cool extensions. I've got gmail notifier and weatherfox running, but for some reason I forgot to install mouse gestures... Way cool, give that a try.

Just in case there are any other interested Mac users needing to export Safari bookmarks...Close Safari, go into the Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and type in the following line of code exactly as it appears:defaults write com.apple.safari IncludeDebugMenu 1Reopen Safari, and you should have a Debug menu after the Help menu, with lots and lots of options...one of which is Export Bookmarks! To turn off the Debug menu...type in the same line of code with a 0 instead of a 1. Enjoy!

I installed Firefox a week or two ago after a nudge from ragingfish.Today, I encountered a 'unique' problem: I was trying to upload two files (about 250,000 bytes total) to a major package delivery service/quickprint chain for printing. Go through about 7 pages of check-boxes to indicate what they're supposed to do with the stuff I'm sending, point to the files on my local drive to upload (one hour before a 1 p.m. deadline), and hit 'send'. I'm on a dial-up connection, so it didn't surprise me when the data didn't begin to transfer immediately. After 20 minutes, it was still just sitting there, so I closed the session, restarted Firefox, and tried again. 4 times over two hours. 0- 4 on a successful data transfer. See a pattern here?I loaded Internet Exploder, re-entered the 7 pages of choices ONE MORE time, hit send, and voila, two completely successful file transfers within mere moments! The bad news? By now I'd piddled away two hours and missed the deadline for a Thursday pickup. Now I'll have to wait until Friday evening to get the finished products.
