CEL not the gas cap after all

A couple of weeks ago, I had a CEL. I thought it was the gas cap being left loose (my finace gassed up, and didn't think he clicked it 3 times). After going through several driving cycles on the highway, and refilling the tank, the light didn't go out. So, I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery. The light went out. Yay!Well, it came back on Thursday. Crap ... off to the dealer. I am totally impressed with the service I got (which is a shocker, so kudos to Capital Pontiac in Regina), but not so impressed with the price. Here's what happened:Scanned for codes. Found P0446 - Evap system failure.Performed diagnotic for P0446 - found that the fuel tank pressure sensor is reading 229.6 mmHg pressure with the cap off - should be zero. The fuel tank pressure sensor is defective. That cost me $106.60 CDN. Ouch. The part is in the USA. Takes 7 - 10 business days to get here (Pony Express?).So, here's the repair estimate:Sensor - $90.15Shop supplies - $4.25Labour - $42.50Taxes - $17.80Total - $156.06In total, to get this repaired, it will cost me $262.66 CDN. I feel abused.

Ouch! I guess you're past your warranty, then? That's not one of those normal "wear and tear" problems...

Does Canada have a seperate federally mandated emision system waranty? Something like 5 year/50k miles? Owners manual may disclose it, if there is one. Here is a link to a US EPA letter describing the waranty.

I wouldn't think a fuel sensor would fall under an emissions warranty...Seems to be at the wrong end of the cycle...

Yes, we still have the emissions warranty, but this isn't an "emissions" part, it's a fuel system part.I'm off to add the part number to the master list.

i know i have replaced a couple closed canister valves (mounted on air box), and 1 by-pass vavle (on the canister) but that was a 03 corolla. oh boy sounds like everyone needs to start saving up for these valves. damn toyota!! this valve crap has been popping up big time at my dealer. as some as the weather got real nice, CE lights abound in the door way. sorry to here that, but right know that's what seems to be toyotas' down fall on some cars. THOSE DAMN VSV's never had a real problem when they all mounted under the hood.
