Umm. From what I heard. The vibe exhaust manifold is not restricitve at all. Very free flowing and there have been instances where people have actually lost HP's. This is just from what people have told me. Inder Singh

The exhaust manifold on the 2zz is very nice design, the 1zz on the other hand is terrible. I've seen it, very restrictive.

It looks like they would. I just don't know about the quality.

A good header has uniform diameter through the bends, no rough internal edges or welds, a smooth transition to the collector (the common pipe into which each cylinder's individual runner/tube joins), diameters chosen for the best compromise between good gas velocity and minimum restriction, and usually, equal length runners of the correct length to resonate like an organ pipe at the desired RPM to extract more exhaust, leaving room in the cylinder for more fuel/air mix and thus more power. In the old days most standard exhaust manifolds were crude, small diameter castings with sharp corners, poor flow and no "tuned lengths", so a good header could add 10% power or more. Now most mfgrs. do at least a reasonable job and it's harder to improve upon their work. The concensus is that the stock 2ZZ part is as good as any aftermarket part, but that there are gains possible on the 1ZZ. I'm a bit skeptical, as it doesn't look too bad either. I would have to see independent dyno testing to believe any more than a 5 HP gain on a mostly stock 1ZZ (Although, just as with your piggyback chip Hope, not all important gains are at peak power; the right design might boost torque a bunch and just not lose any power at the peak.)

thanks madbill. i figured one of you tech guru's would know. so when you port and polish your header, that's just basicly polishing the inside up so it's more free flowing?

There was a group buy on headers for the 1zz on the Corolla forum. When they have theirs installed we should have some #. I thought about but it has no CARB# so I don't want te remove it in 2 yrs when I have to smog my car.

The JP Performance header offered in the group buy is also available in a 'stealth' model. The 'stealth' model allows you to retain the stock heat shield. With the heat shield in place, you cant really see the header.

I thought that only the std. header was in the group buy?

You could get either one, except the 'stealth' version was $100 more. I got the stealth so that when smog check rolls around I wont have any problems or need to remove anything first.

For $100 less I think I could find a way to mount the stock heat shield on the "non-stealth" version! Besides, GM/Toyota wouldn't have spent the money on a shield if it wasn't needed to keep things from cooking...

Did the stealth header make a differance in perormance on your car. Is it n/a or blown? Do you have any pics of the header before or after install? Do you think that it is woth the $ on a n/a car? Smog is such a pain in the (removed) in Ca. I am glad that I have a CARB# for my Injen intake. Thanks, Doug

I havent received my header yet. I will be getting the TRD SC soon, so I wont be putting on the header until after the SC install. If I was not getting the SC, I wouldnt bother with a header.

Thanks for the advice. I found your other post about waiting for the header. I am not in a hurry to spend more $ on the car right now.
