Computer Suggestion for all you XP users

Microsoft has released a beta version of XP Service Pack 2. They do not recommend installing it on a production computer. I tried it out on my old computer and I am just recommending that you do not install it unless you feel like doing a reconfig of your Internet Explorer. Not that anyone is really thinking about installing this version, but if you are, there are a ton of pluses but wait until it is in full production release to update your computers.

I currently am using XP pro and I have every update avilable from microsoft at this time, and I havent had any problems runnning anything or been asked to change any settings.I leave my computer on 24/7 and connected to cable. So I would be considered high-risk for "attacks", but between the router, wireless, firewall, and nortan I got about everythign covered against most problems.

You are in good shape, the SP2 beta has to be downloaded from a different site than Windows Update. I was merely warning that, if on a whim you decided to install it before the production release, DON'T!

It is also worth mentioning that *most* beta versions released by MS aren't anywhere close to stable. I've been a web hosting engineer for over 7 years now for some of the largest hosting companies in the country, and you'd be surprised how many customers make the mistake of running beta updates on their production servers. Costs them thousands in the long run.

That's why I ran it on my old computer. I am a network/systems admin. Trust me, the last thing I want is one of our servers going to crap.

Just beta MS products are unstable? I was (is) under the impression that all of them are that way......

I was simply posting a bit of friendly advice. ****Disclaimer**** I, in no way, intended to start a debate about the benifits and drawbacks of using PC, MAC or Linux.

I was actually amazed. I beta tested XP when it came out, and it wasn't screwy until RC2. I also frequently run AOL betas.. Sometimes it's a hit 'n miss, but I agree, unless you have a computer that can be down for a while, don't do anything beta, and wait a few weeks after something is released, else you stand to lose some data and productivity.

I have used all of the windows OS's except 3.1 and NT on my home computers, and I do have to say that XP is the best so far.......I just wish Linux had more apps so I could run it on all of my comps. The reason I don't is because I have a "jukebox" computer with about 27Gigs of music hooked up to the living room TV and Stereo, and I don't know of any good linux apps that play music.

Slightly off topic, but I haven't been able to implement XP Service Pack 1. When I download and install it, my computer endlessly tries to reboot, but never does. I have had to uninstall XP and reinstall it without installing Service Pack 1. Do you know whether I can install Service Pack 2 (when it comes out) without having installed Service Pack 1? Thanks.

traditionally, each service pack comes with all the prior service releases. in other words, service pack 2 should include everything in SP1, plus whatever was released since Sp1...

Mac OSX is a nice software to use and it barely crashes. I have 2 PCs at home, both custom built and enjoy them as well. I feel your pain as I would also like Linux to have more applications for it and a much friendlier user face.Guys read my posts closely the words JOKING and WINKING means it is HUMOR.Thanks!Sam

Once again off topic, but which versions of Linux has anyone tried?I tried RedHat and Mandrake. HATED Mandrake and was indifferent on RedHat.
