How often is it safe to redline these 8000rpm engines and not hurt it?

Cool, I just got in a little street race with some punk kid in a V6 Dogde Stratus and took it to 8 grand twice, just sounds like it's gonna explode it's revs so high. Ya, I don't do it too often. And I run synthetic oil since day one.

I take it to 8krpm quite often, sometimes even to the full 8300 it will allow (I swear its 8400 RPM, but that is my imagination I bet)

The GTs motor has been tested to a sustained 9000 rpm. If you don't miss a shift, you can't hurt it. It's not just good valve design, the whole motor was designed to take it. Here's info: http://russ.angrypacket.com/celica/

Only one time since owning my Vibe GT have I been in LIFT and not taken it to 8300RPM. It is safe and VERY fun. This engine is made to rev high!!!!!!!!!!!

Well then what about the base engine is that designed to go redline too and take it or just the GT engine?

I run mine to the rev-limiter (8400-8500 rpm) at least once or more a day... no problems so far... except the clutch and now my 2nd gear synchro! but thats going in the shop tomorrow... and the original clutch problem was driver error.... DO NOT TRY TO START OFF IN 6TH GEAR THINKING THAT YOUR AN AMAZINGLY SKILLED DRIVER! that was my dumb mistake!

I tend to hit our 6400 rev limiter everytime I accelereate onto the highway. So far so good.

I was in 6th gear the rpm's were at about 4-5k and i was doing maybe 15-20 mph and the smoke that billowed from behind my car almost made me cry! DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! or ever for that matter!
