Yet another bike-on-roof question....

I've got a bike and I want to squire it around on the roof of my new Vibe GT; I'm 6-7 so getting stuff up there isn't much of a problem.Thing that's got me confused though is that all these roof rack systems on sale at bike-racks-plus.com and other places seem to want to be attached to some sort of 'crossbar system'. Well, geez, the roofrack's already got crossbars. Dealer wants something like $100/bike plus another $250 or something for crossbars; that's getting to be close to what my darn bike cost in the first place. Can anyone point out something **simple** that's known to fit on the existing crossbars? Failing that, what exactly do I need to shell out for to get the bike on top of the car?

How many bikes do you plan to put on the rack? The stock crossbars (aka:load bars) can only hold 75LBs. If you're planning on carrying two or more bikes, I would highly recommend going with aftermarket load bars. I went with the Thule 751xt and two of the 589 Velo Vice bike racks. They work very well, but you have to mount the bikes backwards or else the trays will be in the way when you open the hatch. I think I paid $350 for the complete system. Worth it for me, because I use it like three or four times a week. I'm not sure of a bike rack that would use the stock crossbars without adding another piece. Like the Thule 889 - Velo Vise Fork Mount Rack Pack pictured below. Hope this helps

Both Thule and Yakima have attachments that use the existing crossbars for they're racks. GT-X has the Thule setup. I'm not sure on the prices, but his works well. I have the Yakima setup, but I bought the lowriders which attach to the bars that run front to back. I don't trust the existing crossbars. Plus, I already have the crossbars from Yakima.Yakima uses what they call mightymounts. they have vertical or horizontal, depending on what you are going to attach to them. For bike trays, you would want the horizontal mighty mounts. Go to yakima.com and check the rack systems. That explains everything.Thule has two different setups for bikes that attach to the factory rack. One is called the Velo Vise Fork Mount Rack Pack and the other is the Big Mouth Rack Pack. These both come with hardware to attach to the factory crossbars. Check thuleracks.com for details.
