navigation system installed

I have a 04 Moon and Tunes Vibe, I was told you cannot swap the radio out and install the Factory Navigation System. The Dealer and Pontiac were WRONG. Pulled out M&T radio plugged in Navigation radio in left the amp alone, the radio sounds better than the original M&T radio. Now I just need an updated disc, anyone have one and can a copy be burned .

sounds pretty cool. Don't know if anyone has copied the latest disc, probably fairly epensive to buy one from Pontiac.Do you have a CD changer, or can the NAV head unit play CDs?

mounted gps antenna behind radio with double stick tape to underside of dash pad close to window in the center, and grounded a wire from the bracket to a ground source behind the dash. VERY SIMPLE TO INSTALL

I purchased my vibe with the nav system factory installed. I love it and use it a lot. There are a couple of components mounted under the drivers seat. I assumed they were part of the nav system. I was told that this type of system uses direct satelite feed, complimented by electronic monitoring of compass direction and speedometer readings (to guide you when satelite signal is not available, like through tunnels and under bridges etc) and I figured that was what they are for. If you got the system from a friend, they should have the map DVD.

Unfortunately (i have tried it) you cannot copy the Nav disc yet. it is a dual layer DVD containing roughly 7.8gb of info. DV-R is only 4.7gb. and the disc cannot be split onto 2 discs. My advice would be to try other manufacturer's regional (and cheaper) nav discs and see if any of them read. The Pontiac/Toyota disc is extremely expensive, but not without reason. Our discs contain the data for all of North America, most discs are only regional. You may have some luck with this keeping in mind that the HU is manufactured by Delco Electronics and the disc is made by Denso for Toyota.

I just swapped out my radio for a navigation system but can't get the radio to work. Did you have any problems? Any ideas why it won't work? Also, it's saying that I'm in Pennsylvania (I'm in Michigan). Can't figure out what's going on. As far as mounting the gps antenna, do you have the flat side up against the plastic of the dash (flat side up) or is the rounder part up? Anybody have any ideas?

Has anyone figured out a way to use an outside video source on the Nav Display? i.e. external DVD player etc...

The gps antenna should have round side up. As for video input, no, not yet. There are at least two companies that you can send your NAV unit to and they'll build a video-input into it..but nothing homebrew as of yet.

did anyone have to reset their car computer to handle the nav system?

Nope, the car's ECU and the Nav system are two seperate beasts. The only interaction is that in the cars that came with Nav, they get the speed sensor and reverse signal going into the nav system. There's no direct interaction with the car's computer. However, on cars without the factory NAV system, the signals required to make the factory NAV work 100% are missing.

When you say 100% missing... what do you mean?Does it mean I have to find the output of the VSS going into the ECU and wire it into the harness of the NAV, and same for the brake wire? For those who have done it what are the steps?1) Remove Radio2) Attach GPS antenna and ground Antenna bracket3) ?? find VSS signal and wire to ?? pin on the NAV harness4) ?? find brake signal and wire to ?? pin on the NAV harness5) Plug in old radio harness and NAV system harness to NAV system6) Load NAV DVDdoes anyone know where the 6-Disc changer coems into play for the Toyota system

I said to "make it work 100%, are missing."I believe the VSS, and reverse signal (not brake) are in the secondary harness which also feeds to the CD Changer under the seat. The CD Changer in the Vibe uses a GM12 adapter into a GM Specific Pioneer 6-disc changer. You'd need to find someone with a service manual to check for the exact right conections.

I bought a used Nav off ebay. I got the Nav unit, Cd changer, DVD map disc and GPS antenna for $800. I bought it Feb 2003. The only items that don't work are the maintanence items (like reminding you to get an oil change). This happens to be an advantage as the destination can be changed while moving. The only item I have not been able to locate is the cd changer cable. I have looked high and low to no avail. Anyone have an idea? I am new here, but I post of matrixowners.com on occasion.

stillageek: was the installation as simple as just swapping out the old with the new? I can't figure out why mine won't work.

Yep, I pulled the old one out. Used double sided tape for the GPS antenna and slid the new one in. I assume you have a GPS antenna attached? Also make sure the radio antenna is connected. What exactly won't work? I think I had to help it out and tell it where I was the first time I used it.

I'm not getting any sound from the radio or CD player. The GPS part is working fine. Also, it won't switch bands and stays at FM2:(

Sounds like you might have a bad Nav Unit. Did you plug in the speaker harness ? If so I believe the unit is defective. That is something I worry about as Toyota won't fix it as it was orginally sold in a Vibe. Heck even if I had a Vibe Pontiac wouldn't fix it because it was sold in another car.

The Vibe has the speaker wiring in the main harness. I forgot to ask, are you putting a Vibe NAV in a Vibe, or a Matrix NAV in a Vibe? Also, do you have the M&T package already, or just the stock stereo?
