Flaky finish on radio

Anyone else had the finish flake off their factory stereo? Noticed the other day that right below the display, I'm seeing shiny black plastic. Not sure why it happened to mine, it doesn't generally come in contact with chemicals (i.e. armor all, etc) when cleaning... You just gently touch the surface, and more flakes off...I wonder if THIS would be a warranty repair?

My stereo is getting replaced this week for the same thing. Finish is rubbing off on a couple of the buttons.

Well, I got a "Ok, we'll look at it" from the dealer... Taking it in next week. The CD player has been giving me some problems too, I hope they just go ahead and replace it. We'll see.

I just checked mine today, and I've got no problems here. However, I also had mine replaced right after I got the car because my single CD player was doing that rubbing thing when you braked or accelerated. I think that the early production models or the stereo were just crap!

I had the silver flake off the radio bezel near the volume knob after a couple months. The dealer replaced it under warranty no questions asked.

I've got the Nav system, and the seek and CD buttons are the ones starting to flake off and my dealer is replacing it this week.

The only problems I've had with the silver finish on the interior is on the driver's side door, where my knee tends to rub. It's black now.

Those small plastic fragments sure are difficult to get out from between your teeth... Had to floss for a good 20 minutes after knawing on my radio! On the flip side, it tastes like chicken though. threekrows, my seek button shows a significant amount of wear too... Getting a bit shiny on the top and bottom. It gets the most use out of any of the buttons on the radio. Thanks to not having a repeat track feature, I have to keep pushing seek to replay that song over and over.... I noticed that small spot under the display, and as I started to run my finger over it, more started flaking off. Also noticed a similar spot near the seek button the other day that is doing the same. Why this problem took 27,000 miles to surface, I don't know. And, I can't say that I'm the type that beats the hell out of his car... The dealer knows me well, knows how much I love this car, and knows how particular I am about it. Ultimately, the decision will be up to them whether to cover this repair. I think they should, if not for the plastic problems, for the fact that the CD player only works correctly 50% of the time, and becomes worse by the day it seems. I can't say that my "abusing" the radio would cause internal components to go whacko...If they decline, there's a nice MP3 deck out there for me somewhere with my name on it. Oh yeah, with a remote, so i don't have to touch the thing! Update: The new radio is on the way!

Sounds like you got somebody's early 2003 radio. Mine made that exact sound. I thought they fixed that?

The radio looks brand new, and the controls feel new... I really wasn't expecting this. Either I got a new early '03 radio that was sitting around for a while, or got a remanufactured unit that they obviously didn't fix.Third radio's a charm, I hope..... Yikes.
