today i went to hit my sub switch which is in the console to the left of the driver with the security and the rear hatch button. I accidently hit the hatch button and to my suprise it unlatched the hatch. I had an 88 gmc jimmy and you couldnt pop the hatch while in drive which seems like a good idea cause you dont want you stuff to fall out. What do you guys think

It's only the glass release don't forget...not a door release...That aside, I suspect the chances of the average people hitting that button in drive are not very likely. More likely than not only those who add buttons or modify the existing setup would likely run that risk. Just my $0.02.

i acutually did some tests and it is related to speed and not to gear. I didnt toy with it too much but it seemed like if you were above like 5mph it would not open. so that is ok since the door ajar light comes on when the glass is open

That glass shouldn't open while you are driving due to wind. If you notice, the wind comes down the rear/top end of the car and pushes in on the window, (you'll notice how dirty the window/rear end gets?) Also, you have to pull pretty hard on the glass for it to come up. Plus, it doesn't really open up that far when the button is pressed, so you'd have to really want to notice it being open at a stop light to climb in. now if it were in a parking lot and someone walked by it and looked, then I could imagine them noticing.

You know, I always wondered about this, but never did get around to testing it.Why would I wonder? Well, in the not too distant past, I owned a 1985 Dodge Charger. In the infinite wisdom of Dodge's design team, they put the button for the rear defrost right beside the rear hatch release. I popped the hatch on more than one occassion.
