While rummaging around the back hatch of my Vibe, I opened the back right compartment & saw a black plug with 4 or 5 wires attached. Does anyone know what it's for? I thought maybe it could be for additional speakers?

I have the power package. So it can't be for that.

This is a 04 Vibe. I believe the plug had at least 7 holes.

There is only one thing in the area of that plug ---and that is the taillight assembly---Do they work?

The taillights work, the back wiper works, the back washer works, the hatch works, the keyless entry works,.....ahhh the "Great Rear Plug Mystery"! A "shiny new dime" to who ever can figure it out!

I'm wondering if it's a hookup for a trailer wiring harness that they haven't told us about.....

That would be great if it was. I'm planning to hook up a trailer in the future.

Here's a front view of "THE PLUG". The holes in it seem to be only about 1/16" in dia.

Use it for trailor wiring anyways. lol. Maybe you'll pick up some more radio stations.. Convert your trailor in to a huge antenna..

I think I may have read somewhere that when equipped with XM, the XM receiver is mounted in the right rear quarter panel... I think. Wonder if it goes to that, they just added the wiring harness to all of them... Pure speculation there.Reminds me of my friend's Accent which had wiring everywhere for things it didn't have. Perhaps it is just cheaper to make one type of wiring harness to cover all the variables than separate ones for the various options one may or may not have on the vehicle.I dunno!

Just checked my 04'. I have the same plug, only mine was taped up out of sight. It is a 16 pin plug on this Vibe. The wire colors, as you look at the back of the plug, are as follows:Top row:1-N/A2-White with gray stripe3=Red4,5,6,7,8-N/ABottom row:9-Brown/silver stripe10-Black/silver stripe11-Black12,13,14-N/A15-Orange/silver stripe16-Blue with lengthways white stripeToo busy to get my meter....sorry!

Sounds like you have the same plug. Iwonder if these are also on the 03's only they did a better job of tapeing them up.

I can answer that one -- nope - at least not in the Canadian models for sure. I went out last night to look, even checked both sides to be sure, searched way up inside and down as well, and there is no plug of that size anywhere in the rear area of my 03.My vote is for the XM radio option for the US market.....

That is my guess as well. For the people who have this harness, check your radio wiring harnesses. Does the smaller plug (the 12 pin one) have more than one wire on it? That is where the XM plugs into the head unit.

did you try to see if any of those 5 wires have power?

I have the XM option - the plug in the right quarter panel is attached to a metal box. I assume this is the XM receiver.

Yep, I think the mystery is solved! Humm, Now, if I could just figure what that extra button (one of three) is doing on the dash that you can't push......Oh well, I guess that's another mystery. Don't want to drive you guys nuts or anything!!

Does that mean it'd be easy for those of us with '04s to add XM radio?

Not really. You can only get the XM reciever from the factory, and the dealerships are only authorized to get them if an existing XM reciever goes bad. Plus, they have to be coded to the vehicle VIN, and the method for coding them is unpublished..At least, this is the knowledge that I have..

Don't want to drive you guys nuts or anything!!If you pull off the trim, you will see that button hides the cable that disables recirculation if you switch into defrost mode.Try it. Put on recirculate. Turn the knob to either defrost or defrost/floor. The recirculate button will get popped out. It's to keep you from recirculating moist air which, in turn, will prevent the fog on the window from clearing. All the gadgetry that goes into that button popping out are housed behind that third "mystery" button. See here:

Glad we got that one nailed! I am wondering though, why do almost none of the wires in that pigtail in the back match up to (color wise) to the pigtail in the back of the HU? err, at least my non-XM HU pigtails did not have those colors....IIRC...
