OK, I know VVTI stands for Variable Valve Timing w/Intellegence. But what exactly does that mean/do?

Variable Valve Timing means that the valves can open and close at different intervals resulting in a larger power band. It was originally developed by Honda. You can see a really good explanation with diagrams at www.howstuffworks.com

It is Toyota's version of Honda's VTEC. It automatically controls spark and valve timing for maximum efficiency based on throttle demand. When you stomp on the gas, it tunes the engine to run for peak power, when you are idling around town or taking a lazy drive, it manages the engine to run at max fuel economy.
