The wire is to power the map lights in the back of the mirror. See those 2 buttons under the mirror? Press them and the map lights go on.The dots on the windshield are there to help block the sunlight. They take up the space inbetween the sun visors when they are down.Basically the same thing on the passenger side of the windshield. There are no dots on the driver side because of the headlight sensor.

old thread yes i know, but i think it's still relevent, how much voltage is going through those lines? i recently purchased a GPS unit and i don't like the dangling cord to the outlet. i wanna either re-route/make a 2nd plug up top, or take the line from the mirror lamps and use that. i have a 04base without moonroof.

You want to hard wire your GPS to your car?I would think you would need your own switch, relay and fuse for that.

The dome fuse is always hot. If I plug mine into a switched power source, it will auto turn off when I turn off the car, and that could come in handy. If you want to run a wire from a different source, it would fairly easy to run it up the A-pillar (between the door and windshield)

Might want to be careful if you're thinking about connecting the GPS directly to the wiring in the event yours doesn't actually run off of 12V. Sometimes they put a small power supply in the cigarette lighter plug to drop the voltage down. My handheld's power cable is that way.

My handheld's power cable is that way.i'm figuring that mine runs off of 5 volts because the plug in the back is a USB plug. standard USB from a computer is 5 volts. it will require a bit of work but if i find out the pin outs of the usb plug i can wire the plug into a voltage regulator then into the mirror power.joatmon, do you have a link about the switched power outlet?

heis refering to any power that turns off when you turn the car off. ie your lighter plugs and such. if you want to be able to use the gps with the car off. you could use the maplight power which is always on.you just have to remember to turn it off so you wont drain your battery.
