Theft... pretty stupid.

My area here has been hit with several vehicle thefts in the past weeks. A buddy of mine got his diesel 2500 chev ripped off. He parked it outside his work, left it running and stepped inside for 5 mins for some paperwork. The truck was parked 10 feet from his office. He hears the engine rev up and roar off down the road, by the time he got to the front door the truck was headed off out of sight. A few days later someone climbs the 10ft barb wire compound fence at my dealership (just down the road from where my buddy works) and steals the mounted lights off our 2004 3/4 4wd plow truck.Last night not even 5 minutes after closing, while people are still leaving the dealership even, two guys try and steal a 2001 Dodge Ram from the used car row. In plain sight and under a lot light. What the hell? They took off the second the sales guys started heading over so the truck was left alone with a screw driver on the seat. Took the cops till this morning to show up to dust for prints...This is all just really stupid though.

He could see his truck from his office but had his back turned.

Idling your car while you go inside for a couple of minutes is not a good idea. Besides, with average vehicle, the gas you use when you start is worth about EIGHT SECONDS of idling time. So unless you plan to be in and out in 20 seconds, you're really better off shutting down your engine.

It should not be to hard to find his truck, its lowered and tuned up.Someone had to be just driving past, thought "hey I need a truck" and turned in and took it cause he works at a Car Star body repair shop, it was after hours and no one was there... Its really weird.

This is one of the reasons why I like having a remote start system. I can engage the remote start while the car is running to do a "valet take-over"... It keeps the engine running without the key in the ignition, and I can activate the alarm part of the remote start with it still running!Even if I didn't arm the alarm, the second someone got in and put their foot on the brake, it'd shut down...nevermind the wheel would lock up if they tried to turn it...A lot of people have figured out that you can steal someone's car when it's warming up. Please people...go out and get a remote start system if you're going to do that. You can get them for $130 or so, and I can even give you complete instructions on how to do it!

I start my car with the spare and then lock the doors. If they want my car they will have to break the windows. But with my windows so darkly tinted, you can't see a key in the ignition so they could think I auto started it with a remote.

I lock my doors, no electric locks... and I leave the lights on.The repair shop this was stolen at is off the road which is a 4 lane road with a large grassy area between the two lanes. Trees on both sides of the parking lot that sits way off the road. No sidewalk, no body walks out there. Its on the outskirts of town. It was scouted, his habits perhaps watched... actually seems fishy to me though I did not say anything.

Your friend is an idiot and his insurance should NOT cover this loss.

Who ever said everyone was intelligent like us? Doesn't bother me what happens.

Exactly. What upsets me is when my insurance rates go up to cover losses like that. It was like leaving $30,000 dollars cash laying on the sidewalk while he slipped into the office. Chevy trucks are the number one target in Oxford county and have been for years. There must be a chop shop nearby. We have had continual warnings at our workplace (in Oxford county) about the theft of Chevy trucks from our parking lot. During one period, there were Chevs being stolen right out of the lot almost every night - only Chevy trucks, usually 4 wheel drive. The guys would come out after work and find a pile of glass where their truck was parked. They were being stolen for parts. All this while 'security' was busy smoking.

It would not unlock it again.Worked like a charm.

I do that all the time, start it with the spare, lock it (manual locks) and use the regular key to get in... no probs. if they really wanted my car they would have to break the window and find a way to get it out of the driveway its blocked in by a truck heh.
