Equinox is launched

I work at the assembly plant that builds the Equinox. After years of planning and preparation, we launched production last week after a big launch celebration. I took some picttures of a blinged up Equinox they had at the plant for the celebration. It was done up by GM engineers, with a budget of $250,000. Actually, the budget started out at $250,000, until they got the Liberal Party's sponsorship program involved in it, then the cost went up to 27 million dollars. That's the Canadian way. Anyway, enjoy the pictures. I made a short AVI video of the vehicle being moved, along with sound. I'll try to link the video here for everyone to see later.

The Equinox is a little more money than a Vibe. The base Equinox will be a little over $20,000 in America. You can load it right up with everything from leather, AWD, OnStar +++ for under $27,000 U.S.

I just read in the Automotive News weekly update that Pontiac is going to have a "Sports Wagon" version of the Equinox for 2006.

Here is the headline from Automotive News: March 1, 2004 GM plans Pontiac sport wagonVehicle will be sibling of compact Chevrolet EquinoxPontiac will add a small sport wagon for the 2006 model year, built on the same platform as the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. Supplier sources said GM will build the Pontiac at the CAMI Automotive plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. ---------------------------I do not have a subscription, so I cannot get tot he full story

I don't think the Montana SV6 is what they are talking about. The Montana SV6 is the minivan that is coming out in late 2004 as a 2005 model. The "Sport Wagon" sounds like something different.

There are plans to build a Pontiac version of the Equinox for 2006. It will look a little different and have a bigger engine (250 HP). The engine in the Pontiac will probably be the same Honda engine that Saturn is now using in the VUE. There is also talk of a Suzuki model being built at Cami also. We're going to be very busy. We are only utilizing half of the plant right now, but the plans are to retool the other side and build the Pontiac and Suzuki on the other line that is now mothballed. Of course, this is all conditional on our ability to have a successful launch of the Equinox model. So far so good.

From today's The Car Connection:Pontiac Getting Equinox-AlikePontiac is getting a version of the Equinox crossover wagon coming to Chevy dealers for 2005, Automotive News reports. The Equinox will be built at GM's joint-venture with Suzuki in Ingersoll, Ontario, and has been running far below its capacity with its most recent products, the Vitara/Chevy Tracker. The weekly reports a Suzuki version will also be spun from the same architecture for the 2007 model year. Each of the vehicles will share some componentry with the Saturn VUE crossover, already on sale.I thought about getting a Saturn Vue before deciding on the Vibe. The Vue was abit too large, and abit too plain looking. I believe a properly designed Pontiac version would eat into Vibe sales. I assume that GM would rather push a car designed and built solely by it (and Suzuki), rather than relying on a Toyota chassis and engine.

Just Imagine if the Aztek had the same body design as the Vibe, Pontiac wouldn't be able to keep them on the lot

Maybe they'll design the style more aggressively over the newer bland Vibe style. If they make it a powerful sport wagon, I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like.
