Compatibility, mostly. DVD-R is supposed to be more compatible with older DVD players, whereas DVD+R works better with the newer. I've yet to see a -good- answer on which is better, though I primarily use DVD+R.I currently have a Multiformat TDK indiDVD writer, 4x DVD+-R and RW. I have it Firewire, because I have a few firewire enclosures for CD/HD drives.Basically..pick out any internal DVD writer that you like (or is priced right, i'm very happy with the TDK, and I think it's only around $150-$170 right now), then find an ADS 1394 Drive Kit. Usually around $100 or less. You'll find it's a bit cheaper than the external drives.I haven't had any performance hits this way, and the enclosure is good to work with other drives if you ever want to change it out.1394 Drive Kithttp://www.adstech.com/product...I-800Dual Link USB + 1394 Drive kithttp://www.adstech.com/product...LX185TDK Multiformat burnerhttp://www.tdk.com/dvdburners/indidvd4xmulti.htmlThat burner is the older 4x version, they have an 8x out as well.

Go with what Jahntassa said and buy an internal one with an enclosure. That way you can upgrade later and still use the enclosure. Also the best place to buy this type of suff is http://www.newegg.com Your going to want to get something like these:http://www.newegg.com/app/View...epa=0h ... ew...epa=0

Since Christmas, I've already burnt over 100 DVD-R's and about 20 +r's.If I'm not mistaken about the formats, here is the difference in how they "burn"The + format burns using a constant Angular velocity, so it can burn faster than the -R's, but it has to burn at a Constant angular speed otherwise you will get errors. The -R format burns at a constant Linear velocity which is slower, but it doesn't have to be a constant speed, so you will not get the possible errors that a +R would.
