roof rackemergency, please help

Finally got off the black plastic covers and removed the cross beams...Everyone said "just pull until it comes off even if it seems like it will break" Sure enough, they broke. The clicks that fit around the yellow push tabs snapped off. I examined the pushtabs and the piece that broke off...I have no idea how it would be possible to get them off without breaking them, it doesn't make sense. Anyways...Im gonna hot glue the pieces that broke back on so the ends stay secure for the time being. If anyone for some reason has any extra black end pieces that arn't broken or scratched or anything, I would love to buy them off of you...I can send you cash or maybe check plus what ever shipping is...please

Paul, you seem to have my luck; When everyone else can do it with no problem, then I try it and something breaks or it doesn't go right...

YEAH! That ALLWAYS happens to me. Just spent another 20 minuts trying to glue the broken pieces back on and trying to get it in place...but they dont hook onto the yellow things... It's impossible, the clips are facing the wrong direction so you can't just slide it on...I don't understand.

That happens to me too when i remove the covers.Just get a pair of scissors, open the blade, put the little yellow tab at the pivot of the scissors, and lift straight up. Just be sure not to squeeze the scissors or you might cut the tab off. Then just slide it back into place on the cover. No big deal.

Ok, I got the right one off that way, but the left one.....half of the lip on the top of it snapped in half...atleast now ill be able to get it on...it just wont be any different if the yellow thing wasnt there at all. I still would like to buy new ones if anyone has any.

Mine broke also. Glued the pieces back in with some epoxy glue, slid the yellow fastener back on and re-installed after the glue set up. It's held on so far.

You could try heating the plastic around it with a hair dryer so it expands, might come out easier. I've always done my crossbar removal in warm weather, perhaps that had something to do with it.The other thing you need to keep in mind is that these pieces were not designed with the intention that they'd be removeable. Anyway, you don't need to replace the whole cap just to get the little yellow fastner, I bet the dealer has one lying around, if not, I'm sure they could order them. Can't be more than a few cents (I hope!)

Yeah Sliver, I saw that a few hours ago when i was lookin. Thanks Raging- not just the yellow piece broke...the cap did...you know the slot on the cap where the yellow piece slides into? that part completely snapped off of the cap...so theres no slot left on either of the two caps. You're right the cold is probably why they broke. I'm an idiot. Oh well. Now I know.I was drivin around tonight and even without being totally secured, I don't think they will come off unless someone pulls them off. And with all the imature idiots at my school I probably shouldn't spread that around. Thanks for the help everyone....keep your eyes open for extra caps though please

One of mine also broke. I glued it back into place and got it on there. It took me quite a while but I did it. Then about a week later while I was driving it just flew off. I ended up going to my dealer telling them that it just flew off. I failed to mention that I had taken it off before, and under warranty they ordered me a new one and replaced it. The black cover piece ran like $35 I think if your warranty does not cover it.

The cold is what did it. Plastics become more brittle in the cold. Everyone else was doing theirs in the summer/fall when it was much warmer. I had no problems with mine. I think I warned people about doing this in the cold in one of the numerous threads on this topic before.

I did mine in July- It still broke- I do think that the Cold does play a factor- but it is possible for them to break when it is hot out as well

Once you do get the caps off and remove the bars, there's always the chance that you'll want them back in for some load. I greased the yellow plugs so the caps will come off easier next time...

There's no way I would ever put anything on my roof...wouldn't want it to get scratched on accident.

Basically you just remove the black plastic end pieces on the back of the rack side bars. They pull off straight up. Once they are off, remove the antenna, one screw at the end of each side bar, loosen the lock screws on the lateral bars and slide them off.the black caps will pop off upward, you might want to use a small pocket flat blade screwdriver along the bottom edge of the plastic to help pop the covers off.try roof rack in the search window and you will get lots of help on removal of roof rack cross bars and a ""how to on R and R (shameless plug) of the side rails.
