Rev Limit...

I took my Vibe GT up to about 8300rpms and it felt like the gas cut off. I guess thats the rev limiter. Anyway I was wondering if thats going to shorten the life of my engine. Thanks

Only did it twice. I just wasn't quick enough on my shift...

Thanks for the replies. I would assume since this car is aimed at the "young" car buyer that GM/Toyota would take that in consideration and would limit the revs so you can not blow the engine.

If you downshift wrong (shift into too low of a gear for the current speed) can you push the RPMs past the redline, or is there an interlock in the tranny to prevent that from happening?

I know if you downshift an automatic, it will not actually allow it to go down into the lower gear until the engine is going slow enough...From what I remember, though, with a stick, do it right, or blow it up.

Does anyone remember the photos of the Acura or something that shifted into 2nd going like 70 and blew the crap out of his engine. what a jack (removed)

It also shuts down the spark going to individual cylinders to control detonation, and misfiring.

Hitting the limiter shouldn't hurt at all unless you stay there. The engine's not designed to run with intermittant fuel but bumping the limiter is no big deal. Valve float is the biggest issue here and they won't float until well above cut-off. Higher part speeds and loads cause more wear but its normal wear.

I bounce off the rev limiter all the time. Sometimes to (removed) somene off on the road that is annoying me, I'll come up on the window and bounce off the rev limiter for 5 seconds or so. With the CAI, it's pretty loud. These motors are a lot tougher than you guys think. The tranny is the weak link, but sitting on the rev limiter doesn't affect the tranny per se. I use Mobil One oil and drive it like I stole it a fair bit of the time. It likes to sing at 8350rpm.

I wouldn't hold it against the limiter. Incomplete combustion can fuel wash the oil of the cylinder walls and contaminate the motor oil with fuel. Probably not a big issue here but i like mine too much. Mobile 1 doesn't actually protect better than a few conventional oils and often shows higher iron wear in used oil analysis. It doesn't really last longer either since the 5w30 starts as a thin 30wt and shears down thinner within 5k mi. A synth will ussually keep a motor cleaner over time. Its as good as most things out there but isn't offering you any better protection against wear, especially at high loads. http://theoildrop.server101.co...00016 Check out this link and do a few searches for your Vette. They really like thicker oils.

Thanks for the link, goodvibe.I am a big fan of M1 and have run it in my C5, which I roadrace frequently and it's factory fill anyway and required for warranty coverage. I could use another synthetic, but M1 has worked for me. I have also exceeded 300F in oil temperature roadracing. I don't think ANY conventional oil is going to hold up to those heat levels.I have not burned a drop of oil in my Vibe GT, I went 7,000 miles on the last M1 oil change and it literally did not burn a drop of synthetic oil. I'm impressed to say the least as all my VTEC motors from Honda burned oil, though not that much. My LS1 in the C5 burns oil, not so much around town, but a fair bit roadracing. Nature of the beast..

I agree M1 is fine, it's just not the majic elixir some think. When I tried it in my GT, the motor was mechanically louder but that's not a wear indicator. I've gotten my best milage with Royal Purple but it really didn't hold up long enough for the price. I'm still playing around trying to find the best for this car because it's hard not to wind it up now and then. There's a few regulars on that link that own Vettes so I thought you might dig it.

The majority of that link was discussing trisynthetic, now supersyn is out and from what I've heard and read, it's a superior oil. We're splitting hairs here though. Keep fresh oil of almost any variety in a modern motor and it's going to last longer than you'll probably want to keep the car anyway, even running it hard!

They've added moly, still often shows high iron in used oil.

Hopefully not too much iron shows up in my motors as both of them are all aluminum.
