While I don't have the flu, I've been sick as hell too since last friday. Sneezing fits, coughing up lungs, sinus headaches, congestion. Apparantly it's an "upper resperatory infection." IMHO, an upper resperatory infection is what they call it when they don't know (removed) is wrong!

I don't get flu shots anymore. The last time I got a shot I got the flu. So what is the point of it. I haven't got a shot in three years and I haven't got the flu in three years, coinsidence, I think not.

You can't get the flu from a flu shot. Its a dead vaccine, not a live one.

Also, the flu shot DOES NOT guarantee you won't get the flu, but more often than not, if you do still get it, it will reduce the severity of it...So you can't lose!

Every time my mom has gotten a flu shot, she's gotten sick. I've seen it. I have never had a flu shot and probably won't get one until I'm elderly. I get sick every winter from different things anyway so I'm used to it. I'm rather sick right now. I have the congestion, sneezing, headaches, muscle aches, constant tiredness, etc. Happens every December right before finals week. Amazing. Try taking finals for hours on end like this. I hate this.

if i remember properly, the vaccine is a weakened, almost dead dose of flu, which your (t cells?) come and kill, enabling them to recognize the culprit, should it come again

I think a lot of people mistake other viruses for the flu. According to a canadian health website the vaccine is a dead vaccine.

Well, theres throwing up involved, and doctors diagnose it as the flu. I never get that sick...knock on wood. I haven't had the flu in about 4 years, of course now that I said that I will get it.

It depends, the stomach flu does. Influenza is like a really bad cold with body aches. My brother in law got influenza a month ago and it turned into pnumonia. Different viruses but it is called the same.

Sputnik is correct, its definately a dead virus (actually 3 viruses if I remember correctly) which when injected causes an immune response (good job Drunkenvibe). Now it is possible to have a larger than normal immune response and this is whats probably (I'm no Dr.) happening to Stang's mom.By the way 5 days from the onset and I'm finally starting to feel better , I guess I should go back to work

The vaccine usually changes every year, depending on which strain of the virus is prevalent in your geographic region at the time. Usually after one flu season, enough people have been exposed to the current virus (even if not all of them actually got sick from it) that a significant part of the population has an immunity to it and it stops spreading. But the problem with viruses is that they mutate, and some mutate relatively quickly. So when the mutated virus enters the body, the body has to start all over again to fight it off because it is now a different virus. So the vaccines have to be updated all the time as well.

Yes, they make the vaccine for influenza (not the stomach flu) about 6 months before flu season and they base it on what strains they think will be prevalent in the next flu season. Like right now the vaccine in Canada does not have the fujian strain, yet thats the one thats the most prevalent right now. It will lessen the symptoms if you do get the fujian strain, but they didn't anticipate that strain so therefore no vaccine for it this year.

I've never gotten a flu shot, and I've never had a problem with the flu...just stomach bugs and colds and here lately, the case of bronchitis that refuses to go away...I'd be afraid to get a flu shot anyway because I just know I'd get it.

Ever since Christmas one year when my bro didn't get the shot and the rest of us did, and he got sick and we didn't, I always get it. (Except this year, of course). The shot doesn't give you flu anymore than a tetanus shot gives you tetanus, or the polio vaccine gives kids polio.I do know some poeple who have chicken and/or egg allergies who're given the shot and it made them sick as dogs! Stupid doctors...

There are many types of flues, the shot protects from only one.

Years ago it was only one. you can get sick regardless from anything, with or without a vaccine. you're just less likely. and there are so many strains of the flu that they are GUESSING what strains will be a problem. so if it's a different strain, the vaccine isn't going to do much for you. but if you are in a high risk category, it's a good idea to get the shot if you can because some of those strains are NASTY!

Yeap, I have gotton them twice before but did not this year. Let someone else who needs it get it besides my company could not get them like they did years past. I usually never get sick and in the 5 years my wife has known me, she said I have been sick once. I am not worried this year and know I will not die without one. I think all kids should get them, since they spread sicknesses quickly. Elderly next and then everyone else. JMO
