News Releases November 10, 2003, 8:00 a.m. EDTGM Performance Parts Announces New 170 HP Supercharger KitDETROIT - General Motors announced today that GM Performance Parts is offering consumers a new supercharger kit for the Pontiac Vibe. With an Eaton Roots-type blower that feeds the 1.8L engine with 7.5 lbs. of boost, the engine produces 170 hp at 6,800 rpm. This powerful supercharger provides power across the entire RPM range - right away - greatly reducing the power boosting delay usually found in turbocharger kits. "When you want to make awesome horsepower and torque numbers, the supercharger is the way to go," said Gary Penn, product specialist - GM Performance Parts. "As soon as you hit the gas, you feel the power of the supercharger." The Eaton Roots-type supercharger was developed to maximize both engine horsepower and torque without sacrificing durability. With the supercharger, horsepower increases up to 30% and torque is boosted up to 18-percent versus stock trim. "The design ensures the supercharger meets GM engineering standards for performance and durability and gives it the clean, OEM look people want," Penn said.The supercharger also has its own unique vehicle control module calibration, ensuring performance, delivering over 150 lb.-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm - that's over 20 lb.- ft. more torque than the Vibe GT!Don't have a millennium to install your supercharger? No problem. "You won't have to make modifications or need a big mallet to install our supercharger," Penn said. "Because it was designed to GM's exacting specifications, everything fits precisely - allowing a trouble-free installation." The supercharger kit contains the mounting brackets, fasteners, air ducts, adapters, PCV hoses, baffle and tubes. An extra fuel injector and accessory drive belt are included and required for complete installation.The kit is only available through GM Performance Parts and can be purchased at any GM dealership under part number 12498927. Installation is also available, ask your dealer for details.Once consumers get the "go," they can seize the "show" with Pontiac Accessories. In addition to the supercharger kit, GM offers Vibe owners the option of customizing their vehicle with a sports appearance package. The "ground effects" package includes front and rear fascias, side rocker extensions and two spoilers. Anyone else getting that out of this article? No big deal for me, since I own a GT, but I don't like that they don't cover the supercharger for the 36 month 36,000 miles that the rest of the car is covered.At least the supercharger doesn't void the rest of the warrenty, which is very nice

if the max power is at 6800, this puts it past the base's original redline, interesting.

And the price is ........ yeah I thought they would leave that out of their press release. I officially hate GM!!!!!

I thought stock 1ZZ was rated at 130 HP, so 30% would be 39HP, putting it at 169.Torque vs HP - Doesn't torque give you acceleration and HP give you the ability to maintain a certain speed under load? mediocre and overpriced? I don't know about mediocre, it gives base or automatic owners engine stats comparable to the GT without having to replace the whole car, so if you bought the base or need auto trans and really want the power, this would be the item to get. Overpriced? $3000 and premium fuel puts it out of my budget, but some people have lots of money to mod their cars.

The peak hp is increased by 30 but the biggest gain comes in the lower-power band. I have an auto Matrix and am very happy with the performance. A fellow Matrix owner and I did some real world test on a long unpopulated road. He has a 6-speed XRS with a CAI and a Magnaflow catback exhaust. In real world driving, my SC auto is quicker. Here are the results:0-60: Winner - SC Auto0-80: Winner - SC Auto0-100: Winner - XRS 6-speedTaking off from 40 in normal cruising rpm range: SC Auto (Not close)Taking off from 40 with XRS in lift or close to lift: XRS (Very close)In lift, the XRS still has more peak hp than a SC Matrix. Wow, sounds good Larry, and the $2500 price from GM Parts Direct sounds much better than the $3000 price tag that was going around. I'll be really tempted next spring.

It's a freakin Toyota part to begin with, and if you want more power from a supercharger, do you really think that they would release one and KEEP YOUR WARRANTY? Stop crying people. Buy an aftermarket supercharger or turbo charger if you want extreme power without a warranty. It would be insane on GM's part to release an uber powerful supercharger and cover it with a warranty. Please people, think logically on the engineering side of things, then apply that to the business side. GM would like to make money, not lose moneyAlso, all the crying about not releasing the supercharger for the 5-speed yet. Sorry GM would like to fix a problem created by the supercharger (wheel hop) rather then just release a part and make you guys suffer with crappy wheel hop. I for one would much rather wait a month or two if it ment better performance and less problems.

Thanks man, I appreciate it... And from what I hear if this super is going to be available for $2500 and change like the TRD-branded one, maybe more folks will be interested... But search as I might I still haven't seen a testamonial from a 5-speed Matrix owner...Pete

Yea, but the $509 S&H charge from gmpartsdirect puts it back over $3000.

I was at the dealer today and bought a new 04 Vibe. While I was there I noticed that they actually had a Vibe in the showroom with the Supercharger installed on it. It had the dealer installed accessory sticker on it with a price tag of 5400.00! Upped the price to just over 26.5K American. A little to steep for my tastes.
