Custom Avatar Problems

When I try to upload a Custom Avatar I get this message: Invalid file type. Only GIF and JPEG images are supported. I know the pictures are JPEG’s because I took them myself and they are within the parameters allowed for size. Any ideas or suggestions?

We have ordered an upgrade to the fourm software which will hopefully fix this problem. It was ordered on 27-Oct-2003.

I just tried to upload the image on a test account with no problems. Make sure the image is stored on your computer (hard drive) - you cannot enter a website address into the Upload Avatar field.

I have noticed with some pictures lately that you upload them and link to the url of the image and so it is displayed in the post, but the picture never appears. This happens randomly because I'll go back to the same post later and the image is displayed. Its very weird.

I have a list of issues submitted to ZeroForum - this is one of the minor ones I included. Should hopefully be a simple fix for them.

I'm assuming you're running Windows with Internet Explorer. 1. Open the image so you can see it in your browser (with animation). 2. Right click on the image and select Save Picture As.3. Choose a place on your computer to save it (usually in My Documents or My Pictures) and click Save.4. Then go to the Avatar section on the forum and click the Browse button next to the Upload A Custom Avatar area. 5. Locate (click on and highlight) the file you saved on your computer (usually in My Documents or My Pictures) and click Open. 6, Click the blue Save button to upload the avatar to your profile.I hope that helps! Let me know otherwise.

I decided to post this problem in this thread since we were discussing posting photo problems. I've attempted to post a photo twice now to the pets thread, however I don't see either post!? They are probably both there but I have no idea whats going on.

I see both posts in the Pet thread. Not sure the issue but it appears to be working here.

Still can't see either of them. When I posted the second (because I couldn't see the first) I saw them both there briefly, but I don't see them anymore.

I find the process of posting pictures and changing avatars very hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes a posted picture shows up in the post, the next time you look at it, they're gone. No big deal, just a heads up.

Once Sputnik refreshed the page she said they showed up - very odd but not out of the ordinary for Internet Explorer, lol.I've noticed when uploading attachments to posts that it may appear it did not work correctly (error or red X) - if you go to another post and go back it shows up fine. I don't know if there is a delay in processing the photo with the new version or not. I included that on my list submitted to ZeroForum.

I was trying to upload a custom avatar, and although the upload worked, the image was modified. It was an animated gif, and after upload, it is no longer animated. The image file was 70x70 , and it was the same dimension after upload, but the file size I uploaded was 4243 bytes, after uplaod it was oer 6000, so it seems that the forum software modified it. i thought maybe it needed to be less than 70x70, so I rebuilt it to be 67x67, The file after upload was still 67x67, the file size grew and the image was no longer animated. I tried uploading an animated gif that I used to have as my avatar (exact same file that used to work fine) and the same thing happened, the file size increased and it was no longer anmated. I know it used to work, today it's not. It has been a while since I uploaded a new animated avatar, so I can't say when the current behavior started,

I've noticed that a lot of peoples' custom avatars have gone out. Is there a problem?

an update, looking for a reason why animated avatars stopped working here, I found a post on the the zeroforum users forum about avatars, and they said:Quote »The software converts the images after they are uploaded. They are always altered. The files are loaded and re-saved by an internal image library. This is done to verify that the images are actually VALID image files, and not just binary data uploaded by a malicious user. The library often changes and re-analyzes the image palette and changes the general structure of the image. This is why the file size increases, and this does not affect the functionality of the software in any way. So, at some point they modified the upload so that images are always reprocessed, and this reprocessing is not smart enough to preserve the animation.
