POLL: Paint Problems vs. Paint Color
Posted: Thu Oct 09, 2003 10:37 pm
by joatmon
Paint quality is an issue, a number of threads here on this. Purpose of this poll is to try to determine if there is any relationship between paint color and paint problems among genvibe members, are there Vibe colors that are more durable than others? This is a bit different than the poll in
http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=5132.Options for each color are Yes or No. A Yes answer should indicate that your vibe of that color has current damage that you feel shows a problem with the paint. A No answer means that you currently do not have damage likely related to poor paint quality. Please answer based on the current condition of your own Vibe, instead of what others have experienced or said. ThanksThe forum software only allows predefining 12 poll options, so if your color with Yes or No option is not available, please add it . Colors I know of are Abyss, Envy, Frosty, Fusion, Lava, Neptune, Salsa, Satellite, and Shadow. To add a choice that is not already listed, click on the link add a new choice below. Also, please note that the zeroforum software will always reorder the poll results based on each options number of votes, so the options with the most votes will always be on top, and there is no way to force them to retain a more useful order pairing the yes/no results for each color.

Anything close to the primer color is going to have better results.

quote:i would imagine frosty is hard to tell if its chipped or not...It's actually the opposite on my Frosty - all the chips (only have 3-4 noticable ones) were noticable as I could see black where the chip was located - very easy to spot. Touch-up works decent on Frosty though - easier to match than the colors with metallic paint.

I'm with our Admin! My Frosty's got measles big time. Worse in 6 months than my wife's Buick in 6 years!

For what I know after I had a scratch on the paint:I don't know a lot about the primer but mine is gray. The Salsa color is given by two coats of paint. The first one is like a fuchsia and the second is a more reddish color. The mix of the two coats gives the beautiful salsa. And there is the clear on the top.

The chip I saw was not up to the primer, only to the 2nd coat of paint. But I have chip to the steel tough.

I have black or dark gray primer on my Frosty Vibe and it shows up VERY visible. Pretty decent chips in the hood and the front lip of the hood specifically. My headlights seem to take a beating as well (not pertinant to this thread, but damaged none the less). Maybe the white primer that is on a few of the Neptune Vibes listed above would have been a better choice of primer color for the Frosty Vibe?!? (white primer possible?).Educated Vibe dealers... do they even exist?

You know, if it's not too late, the bar graphs would be easier to interpret if there was some way of pairing up the "Yes/No"s for each colour, as it is not the number of entries per colour that matter, but rather the yes/no distribution for each.

I voted shadow - NO but if i didnt have the gm front end bra then with the 500 miles per week that i drive (and my car stays parked for 4 days straight) and the speeds at which im driving.....oh man.....i'd have no paint left at all!

after more careful observation of my vibe, i voted satellite no. i have maybe 3-4 paint chips, but nothing that i would consider unusual, especially after the many road trips back and forth from Fbx to Anchorage. lots of gravel, construction, etc. the front end shows a little more because it's just the black plastic underneath. i have to squint to really see it tho.

Mine was built in July 03 and is satelite, it doesn't have any chips yet but the hood and top have small bumps in the clearcoat. Even after waxing it is not smooth to the touch. I have ran into this problem before with Fords, they called it "rail dust" from being transported on a train. I used Clay Bar on the Ford and got most of it off. Does anyone here have this paint problem? I haven't tried the Clay Bar on the Vibe yet.

I have a Neptune Vibe and I noticied while washing it this weekend how bad the chips are. Maybe they aren't bad compared to others (I have about 5-6 spots on the hood). But in comparison, my first car was a freakin' Daewoo Lanos and it had few to no paints chips on it after almost 3 years of driving it. I don't think you can get much cheaper of a car than a Daewoo. I would think the paint on the Pontiac would be much better.

I don't understand how there can be 2 or 3 colors of primer on all the vibes. GM is a big company and as far as I know use a form of electroplating dip to stick the primer on and all i have ever seen is gray primer in the 27 years of building trucks. now all the metal parts should be grey primer and the plastic parts will be a different color underneath (black, grey, yellow, ect) maybe GM/TOYOTA has a different way of doing things at the NUMMI plant in california. are there any vibe owners from california in the NUMMI area that can help us out here or have a friend that works there that can?

If they want to figure out the problem they can take a fender and beat the crap out of it and see what happens with the paint. If they want to figure it out, they shouldn't need Mike's fender. If.

Lava monotone. No discoloration. But it chips with nothing more than the landing of a butterfly. My Saturn had fewer chips after a decade.

My Neptune has light gray primer underneith. I have a few chips on the hood, but I don't consider it very unusual. I voted Neptune-NO. What I have more of is dings from other a-holes opening their car doors into my Vibe. No damage to the paint, but it looks like it was blasted at close range by a golf ball. Three big dings so far. I'll have to try a paintless dent removal place in the spring and have them popped out. Thin metal.

i have an abyss with scratches evreywhere! take it to the car wash, scratches, wash with soft cloth, scratches. This thing really ticks me off, i only have 14k miles and it looks like a huge cat scratched my car. I can see the whitish primer from a distance. I just the other day was able to scratch the paint with my fingernail, (removed) is up with that. I am real nervous about what is going to happen when i return my car from the lease with 40k miles on it? MY car looks like it is 4-5 years old, yet it only has 14k miles? I asked the dealer about what happens when i return and he says they have nothing to do with that, that GMC will handle it and send me a bill if the paint is too messed up,(removed)?I tell ya, the windshield has at least 20 small chips, the paint sucks, and the gray cladding is shredded, i will owe them thousands when it is returned. My car will be worth nothing with 40k miles on it if they don't hammer me for a new paint job and cladding when i return it, is there anything i can do to insure they won't hit me for something not my fault?

I have noticed quite a few chips on the hood of my Frosty vibe when I was looking at the car yesterday. I stopped counting at about 8 since it was starting to make me ill. I went to the dealer to order some touch-up paint. Everyone here advised me to wax the car right after I got it, but I took delivery of my car 2 days after Thanksgiving and we haven't had a warm enough day yet. So, needless to say, as happy I am with the Vibe, I am a little dispointed in how the paint on the hood is holding up. I mean if I have as many chips as I do now in only 4 months, what is it going to look like after 4 or 5 years. I have been seriously contemplating buying one of those hood deflectors, but I am really not sure how much I will like it on a white car. I may just have to resign myself to have the car's hood repainted in a couple of years if it gets bad enough. I really hate the darn gravel trucks in this area too, one threw up a rock and put a little star crack in the windsheild which Safelite has 'fixed' but I still know it's there. Oh well, it's just a car, right?

i didn't vote yet because i only have 3000km on it ('04 salsa 2-tone), but i don't have any scratches either. i did have the 3m stonguard hood protector installed prior to delivery, since i've had great luck with this in the past.i'll keep a lookout for chips...perhaps in another few thousand km my vote will be more meaningful, and i'll cast it.cheers.

I voted Satellite - no. I have paint damage on the passenger side door moulding from the idiot with the two door who used to park beside me, but I haven't noticed any problems on the hood or anywhere else. We've had it since August 02 and do some gravel road driving.

I've just noticed my 1st paint chips while detailing my Vibe. Two small specs on the hood and one on the driver side door. Despite the hood deflector and mud flaps, it still happened. Has anyone had success with touch-up paints on the Vibe?

DupliColor has a new touch up bottle with a brush and a roller ball tip. The tip is great for little chips that collect wax. Clean the tip off after use too.

I finally figured out why my used Salsa 2-tone Vibe had NO stone chips on the hood when so many reported chipping problems with the Salsa color. The hood was repainted before I purchased the car! There's about a .01% color difference when you look at the hood and front fenders in very bright sunlight.

I think I posted before, I know I voted "NO" before on my '03 Salsa GT, but my new answer is "YES, and HOW!" Took a 3-day trip to DC. Friday morning I go and look at the frigging shotgun pattern of tiny chips in my hood. Holy CRAP! I tlooks like I ran through a gravel shower.I think I'm going to start pricing new paint jobs.

Moonstone- No problems that I know of!I'd add it to the list, but I didn't see the link to mod the poll any more...Is moonstone that rare of a color for the Vibe? I've seen a couple of them around Indianapolis (I work on the north side near Fishers), so I didn't think it was that odd, but virtually no one here seems to have one...
