Mazda seems to have a great idea of installing a 100 watt subwoofer under the cargo floor in the spare tire wheel well. Has anyone tried this in the vibe/matrix? Does anyone have an opinion on this? Would the Vibe plastic floor muffle the sound too bad? The Mazda subwoofer is not the very best on the market but it's sufficient for my needs because it doesn't take up any cargo space. Do you know where I can purchase something similar if the Mazda sub isn't feasible. I haven't seen the Mazda brand or any similar product anywhere available as aftermarket. Please help.Thanks.

dobo, welcome to the site!I don't remember anyone using the Mazda sub.There are a couple of thread though about mounting a sub where the spare tire goes.In http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=4592, wildvibe asked a similar question, but got no replies. That was in June, and he said he was going to be working on one, but don;t remember hearing any results.In http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=4520, there are some pics of pissedoffgokart's sub install, which looks like he modified the rear deck and had the subs extend into the spare area. Seems like a good place to mount one, especially to not lose cargo space (I like having cargo space), Not sure what the effect would be on sound volume/quality if you buried it below the rear plastic deck, or maybe threw a cargo mat over it too. If you do get too much of an effect from the cargo deck, it might help to remove the panels in the rear side storage areas (the ones that provide access to the rear light asemblies) like ports to the underdeck area.

Do you ahve any pic of this sub?I installed my amp in the spare compartment.The only way to get enough space to put a sub here is to remove completly the spare tire, which does not sound good to me.

I couldn't find a picture of the Protege5 spare tire subwoofer, but I found something similar on a Beetle forum - http://forums.newbeetle.org/showthread. ... =9104Maybe they will design one for the Vibe soon. It seems a little high priced though!

Crutchfield used to carry a subwoofer/amplifier combo that would mount into your spare tire. I don't know if they still do, or even if it is still made (about 4-5 years since I have looked there, too tempting ).Just looked at their website and didn't find anything.
