Chortling sound on cold start

I have a 2009 Vibe, 1.8L. There is a chortling noise when I start it cold, but no other time. I have replaced the starter, serpentine belt, and tightened the belt some more. It got a little better for a couple weeks but right back to it. I have read that maybe it's the starter not messing with the flywheel right. But I'm hoping there's something more simple someone has found to be the problem. Or if not, just at least a definitive answer.

I've never heard of a "chortling" sound from a car, so some clarification please. When does it start and how long does it occur? (Does it stop as soon as the starter motor is disengaged?) Have you tried to locate the source under the hood with a helper starting the car? Does it depend on ambient temp or just cold engine, say a cold start on a hot day?

If it continues a while after starting, look at the alternator. It has to work harder to charge the battery in the minutes after a cold start.

Is coolant level correct?

Be a little careful about over-tightening the belt.
