not looking for any parts, but how did the 09 die, and what did you replace it with?

Engine is now burning oil like crazy - which points to the piston-rings(which may also be gouges in the cylinders at this point), and the manual transmission just died- locked up and will not shift while running. For the expense to fix both issues or replace both, which will lead to other items probably needing to replace as well ... AC update, front Hubs, and the complete Muffler system. I have done the bulk of regular maintenance myself over the years, short of pulling the engine and transmission .. and consider myself lucky to have gotten over 300K kms without those having issues (until the last couple years). This car is very easy car to work on.

All that being said, the body and inside has held up really well over the years, however for the investment to fix the engine and transmission, I've decided to put that value into a 4Runner (Used - 2017-2020). In looking for the next car that is capable of 300+ KM with near-bullet-proof engine and transmission, I came across the 4Runner as a great option for the next 10yr vehicle (even used).

After 16 years with the Vibe, I'm ready to go up a size, and that will be good for the way I use the vehicle - for both Family stuff and for loading it up with 'stuff''. I was looking at a Tacoma as well - I've treated my Vibe the way you might use a truck (in all fairness).

I have had this Vibe since 2010 and have loved everything about it - the 2.4L engine (even with the piston issues) ran great and still propelled on the highway. As a hatchback it handled everything I could stuff into it, including being over-weighted with home-reno garbage trips to the local dump - no issues.

Also - the only mechanical update was a new clutch a few years ago now, so it really has been solid, and if not for the piston ring issue, and now the transmission, I would continue to try and keep it alive until it simply fell apart around my drivers seat.

Sometimes its hard to move on from a a car you've had for so long, my son's Matrix recently died after he had it for 18 years, and like yours, its just not economical to fix at this point.

The 4Runner should do you well, hope you get the same service as the Vibe, and the tech upgrade of ~10+ years will be pretty cool
