2007 Strange Radio Behavior

I bought a 2007 Vibe today. It seems to be in great shape, with only 65K miles.
The factory stereo isn't working too well, though. It's got the radio that has buttons above the CD slot. There's also a speaker (sub woofer?) on the right side of the rear hatch area.
I can hear some AM stations but the FM stations are very weak and I have to have the volume near max to hear anything. It's effectively unusable.
I think this car might have a factory amp?
I'm not sure if these are common symptoms? I'm wondering if the issue is the radio itself or possibly the amp?
