cel , transmission question=

CEL for about 40,000 miles. It says the torque converter is having a lock problem..
I read sometimes it is false cel.
If it is truly a problem shouldn,t the transmission be totally trashed by now?
It,s just a grocery getting, around town Vibe . Will keeping "overdrive" disengaged prevent problems.
Just run it 3 speed.
