Did anyone see the picture of the Northern Lights on MSNBC?

It is a rare treat to see them this far south. I haven't seen them since I was a wee lad. With so much light polution, they are difficult to see even if they do appear nowadays.

I would, also, like to see them in person. I've always wanted to go to or live in Alaska.

I love Alaska, but didn't care for Fairbanks. sorry, red, but wasn't for me. too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. plus, it's quite deserty and not much to look at.that's why i love Eagle River. just outside anchorage, the main city in Alaska. small and relatively quiet, yet close enough to get to the city. every morning i drive through the chugach mountains... beautiful!

Fairbanks gets HOT in summer??? It's so far north though!!!

it was about 92-95 this summer! extremely hot in the sun. the rays are very direct and the heat is something else. kinda like the sun in a magnifying glass on a bug.... sizzle....

The last time I saw the northern lights I was with a prior GF in front of a campfire. That was an amazing experiance!

You can easily see the northern lights up in the thumb every year when the sky is clear. Watching from the shores of Lake Huron there is no light polution to the north and you can see them clearly. I have seen them as far south as Indiana.

yes, we're talking about 2 different places. this is Alaska. it's not SUPPOSED to get that hot! until this summer, i didn't even knew it got that hot up here. usually 70's are pretty hot, maybe 80. i've been in AZ in 122 F heat. would never live there because it's a giant desert. i love the mountains, forests, ocean, wildlife, etc. nothing like seeing a huge moose walk thru your front yard or a bald eagle perched on the tree around the corner. (as long as it doesn't take my dogs)

I remember when I lived in Edmonton, Alberta, I could see them from time to time.

We could see them really well in October/November when I was up at school in the U.P. It was always like 2am when they were the best. I unfortunately never got to seem them reddish or purplish, but I saw them greenish and dancing a lot. I really miss that.

in the winter, they come out and are just something else. the colors are pretty breathtaking, especially if you get the opportunity to see the red. it's not as common as green.

no offense taken, trdvib...anchorage is too big and crowded for me!!! besides i like living in goofy small towns, you know everybodys business! LOL..we in alaska are blessed to experience one of natures truly awesome displays...you know whats really neat...sometimes you can hear the northern lights...they make a dull roar or a crackle..to see them dance and change directions and colors are humbling...man could never create something like that ( or the moose)...best to view them away from cities due to light pollution (anchorage and surrounding suburbs, fairbanks and uaf)...best viewed when cold (-0* and lower) just lay on the deck with your thermal outerwear on and watch the show!!! and yes it gets hot up here but is a dry heat and all real alaskans melt when this happens (lol) we need our a/c to keep cool...anything over 70* is too warm!!

I saw some northern lights tonight. The were pretty boring though, just green ones, and not really dancing a whole lot. That's what I like about living in rural SK -- no light pollution... you should see the stars outside my window right now!

hey, red! was wondering when you were going to catch this thread. i'm sure you can see the NL much better than here. altho i live in Eagle River, so the show is usually pretty good too.

sometimes takes me awhile to catch up !!!!LOL

Tonight we had some of the best viewing of the Northern lights in a long time. At one point the northern sky was solid green blanket and straight up was red. Did anyone else notice them tonight?

I saw them as well. The best I've ever seen!

Well Mike, they're still visible up here right now, North of the 49th parallel...

i'm hoping for some northern lights tues night while i'm in fbx. the prob w/ anchorage is that the city lights make it difficult to see them.

They're awesome here right now, no city lights, just cold night air. The whole sky is shifting. It's almost as bright as a full moon behind thin clouds.

we see a lot of green lights, but seeing red is a little more rare. but when we do, they are incredible!

I saw them!!! Was in a very rural area (is that possible in IL?) so had almost no ambient lights to 'contaminate' the sky. I thought it was something reflecting off of clouds. Until I realised 2 things: 1. The nearest towns of any size were all in other directions 2. I could see plenty of stars (no clouds).Wow. Pulled over (well actually, just parked in the middle of the road-it was 2AM) and watched em' pulsate and move.Wow.Thank ya Lord!

Heard on the radio today they should be visible as far south as NY/NJ/PA tonight...Gonna watch for them...
