List for engine swap compatibility?

New to me 2004 Pontiac vibe base, has a hole the size of a racquetball through cylinder number one. I need a new engine. I know that a 2003 to 2006 vibe, and a 2003 to 2008 matrix engine is compatible. I've also been reading here on the forums about Corolla engines. I've also read that any 1ZZ engine block will fit. I having a hard time finding vibe and matrix engines locally. Lots of Corollas though. Are they truly interchangeable? Is there a list somewhere? Spent hours searching but I can't seem to find anything on this form.

The engine in your car has Throttle by cable. It would be easiest to install a 2003 to 2004 engine from a Vibe, Matrix, or Corolla.
The 2005 and newer engines are Drive by wire (DBW). This engine would also work, but you would need to swap the Throttle Body from the broken engine on to the used engine.
The 2002 Corolla engine *should* be the same.

Do not consider a Vibe/Matrix AWD engine, or an engine from a GT / XRS, these engine are different.

Don't know where you are, but if your in the states, car-part.com has a tool to search junkyards, maybe that will turn up an engine near you

I had the years wrong in the other thread. Double checked this other thread and updated my post above.

Your 05 AWD car has throttle by cable. It's that thick wire leading from the TB to the Firewall. Here is a picture.

The Drive by wire engines have a blank spot where that cable would go if it was not drive by wire. Here is a picture.
