manual transmission halfshaft correct part number

Post by Brian2003Vibe5speed »

All

A repair shop replaced the right halfshaft on my 2003 base Vibe - 5 speed manual.
Turns out the halfshaft was too short.

Neither GM nor Toyota offers the correct part.
The vast majority of halfshafts that claim to replace the halfshaft do not. The parts book say the original is superceded - and point you to a halfshaft with compressed length of 35 11/16 inches or 907 mm.
That's the part my mechanic installed - it worked until I cranked the steering all the way over - then it popped free at the transmission end.
In short, Do Not Buy the Superceded Part!

Although O'Reillys and at least one other U.S. parts store showed the correct part on their websites, in both cases it was special order. Which meant - when I tried to order it - no longer available.

I found the part from autotruckpartsonline.com up in Canada. It's 36 1/8 inches compressed.
Here is the part number: CV axle assembly # : N69588

Cost including shipping in U.S. dollars was just over $98.

The other option would be to replace the CV joints, and reuse the axles.

Hope this saves someone some headaches -
