Sudden deep exhaust note?

Post by JustVibing »

On Friday, due to a loose roof molding, i hopped a curb, hit a sign and bounced off the same one again with my left front. As i have an 07 Vibe, i had just the bare steelies and the right front was bent to hell. Had to get a new wheel+tire, control arm, and an alignment.

Now i have an exhaust note reminiscent of a Subaru flat engine.

Should i be worried about this?

You should probably look at it, yeah.

Without seeing or hearing anything, logically, if you hopped a curb, you probably ripped the exhaust apart somewhere.

Yes, please have someone look at this.
Having holes in your exhaust piping can cause issues with the computer controlling how much fuel enters the engine.
Also, if exhaust leaks in to the cabin it can cause carbon monoxide poising.

No exhaust damage somehow..

What else might it be?

It also only does it when in drive or reverse, not in neutral or park.

If your exhaust is louder than normal, there is an issue somewhere.

Would recommend taking it to a trusted mechanic if you're unable to find the issue.

Another possibility is something else bent enough, or broke, to contact the exhaust system and change the noise. Deeper noise suggests something large, not a heat shield. Motor mount?

That much damage could also have cracked a manifold or joint, raising the life safety and engine issues pointed out above.

I agree with Andrewclaus, sounds like a cracked manifold or joint, because it is only seen when the engine is underload.

Not too long after the incident, the check engine light came on and threw codes at me about the catalytic converter's O2 sensors not sending the right data.
