I just bought a 2003 GT. Thus far (one day...) it's great.

But I wonder about the 6-sp. shifter. Compared to my CRX and past BMW E30 and Datsuns, it's a bit vague.
Are there bushings or such that might need replacing at 13300o miles?

monkeywrenchracing.com sells Speed Source shifter base bushings, and shifter cable bushings. Those help pick up the slope the plastic shifter has. They also have a short shifter, which really helps out. If you go with a short shifter, you do not need the shifter base bushings.

Yeah I too need to (some day) work on my 2004 Vibe GT shifter assembly. Very sloppy/loose mechanism and especially when going from 2-3 which I rarely do anymore. I pretty much drive it as a four-speed. 1-3-5-6

Reminds me of when we changed the transmission in my '81 Escort, and my father forgot the main seal. I was 20 miles away from home, and ended up revving the engine like CRAZY and going straight into 2nd from a dead stop.

So that MWR Short Throw Shifter plays well with 5 AND the 6spd?

yessir. I believe my short shifter came from MWR.

i highly recommend the short throw shifter from MWR. its awesome! if you are gonna replace it anyways just get the MWR shifter you wont be disappointed!

Did you have any trouble with the shifter knob hitting the dash?
Or trouble with the shifter boot?

ok first of all you need to excuse the condition of my OG shift knob.. (i get sweaty on the back roads ok!!) the boot fits just fine it has a little extra slack tho because of the short shifter. i have a crown royal bag over top of my leather boot is all. the only clearance issue is when i go to shift into 5th gear with my AC plug thing hooked up. i had this issue before with the factory shifter, but if i used a baseball grip when going to 5th my fingers could clear the small gap and i wouldnt destroy my knuckles on the edge of my phone charger(i usually do pistol grip because of the forward shifter position) however with the short shifter this is now impossible to avoid the knuckle grinder so i have to skip 5th gear when i have my phone charging or just use the DC plug. the AC one is nice tho because it can Turbo charge my phone.

Daaaang dude that's gonna be PERFECT for me.
