The Stable Has Grown

Post by zbyers »

The stable has gotten a little larger. Long story short, March 2014 I purchased my 2007 Vibe, Robyn, with 88k miles on it. I am now at 191k miles with minimal issues. In August of 2015, I purchased my 2003 GT with 230k miles on it. She is now at 280k miles and is ready for the retirement home. Car cancer is kicking her behind.

Somewhere between then and now, I have convinced mom to buy an ‘06 AWD, dad an ’09 AWD, sister an ’04 Base, brother an ’03 Base, brother’s girlfriend two ’04 AWDs (one for parts), a friend to get a Matrix, and a few others towards Corolla’s. Hard to beat these cheap, easy, reliable, versatile, fun vehicles with a quirky support group behind them.

With my ’03 GT needing at least $2k in repairs, I set out looking for a new vehicle, and was even scouting out some TDI Sportwagens, Crosstreks, Frontiers, etc. At the end of the day, I really couldn’t sacrifice the cost per mile you get in the Vibes. Essentially, my ’03 GT I went ~25 miles for every dollar I paid for it. Really great value. Recently in my hunt, an ‘04 monotone Fusion GT popped up for sale.

Seeming too good to be true, I did a little internet research. True one-owner car with a mere 96k miles. Verified by the most recently dealer service when he advised it was serviced at 90k miles. Saturday, I departed bright and early to go see if this was a real deal. Six hours later, I arrived in Virginia where the car was located. The myth is true. It really did have only 96k miles on it! After taking it for a spin, we sealed the deal and I drove the 6 hours back home with no issues. Paying only $2500, the new-to-me Fusion GT is a heck of a steal.

I’ll be sticking around these forums for a while. Just hard to get ride that beats the value of the Vibe (especially a GT).

With that said, in the coming weeks my ’03 GT will be parted out if anyone is looking for parts!

Bonus pics of the Fusion my 2007, and with part of the family collection at home.

Congrats on your find. If you are able to do maintenance and repair yourself, it is smart to buy cloned vehicles. I just read about the release of the 2020 Mazda CX-30. I'm not sure why there is a need for another compact SUV in a crowded Mazda lineup, but it has my attention given that the CX-3 is simply too small and the CX-5 is unnecessarily large to carry my umbrella and groceries.

I think that's what the Mazda 5 was supposed to be. Frankly, I'd _love_ to have sliding rear doors on my Vibe. I think that they should be standard on any crossover/SUV vehicle. No risk of banging off of another car, and it's easier to move things directly in and out of the vehicle (as long as you don't have another car parked next to you)

Yep, we do 95% of the maintenance ourselves. Only thing really out of our realm of work is body work. In my short time of driving (10 years), I have only paid someone to do some rust repair.

That CX-30 looks interesting for sure.

Rear sliding doors would be interesting on these. Would make it easier to load some things from the side too.

Rear sliding doors on these and you'd have a Mazda 5. My wife's is only about an inch taller than the Vibe. The biggest difference being that she can't fold down the second set of seats - they're captains chairs. You can fold the third row seating, though.

This thing is beautiful. While I still have the '03 GT on the road, I decided to do some preventative maintenance. Since the clutch was replaced by the mom and pop dealer, I opted to change the gear oil as I have no idea what they used. It did not smell like the Syncromesh I put in it.

Also change the oil, sway bar links as they were making some ruckus, found a cross-threaded wheel stud so replaced that, and also noticed a nut to the lower ball joint was missing. Changed the cabin and engine air filters. Checked the spark plugs, and those have been done at some point in time as they were NGK Iridium plugs.

Lastly, it did not hit lift on the test drive and threw code P1012. Essentially, it built up too much fuel pressure since the lift screen and OCV/lift actuator were gummed up. Pulled those out, cleaned them up, and all is good. Links for guides on cleaning the OCV, and lift filter. I did not clean the VVT filter on the passenger side as smog pump and alternator are in the way. https://www.newcelica.org/forums/showth ... p?t=250432 and (used this latter one more than the newcelica one) https://au.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/ ... strainers/

Lift doesn't seem as responsive as the '03, but that could be because the intake on it and lower lift point. I will be swapping the 03 ECU into the 04 for the better lift engagement (and smog pump bypass with it)

Oh! Also swapped my TB around (had a MaxBore TB), added my hood struts, and did the typical juice can fix (viewtopic.php?t=36996) to the driver’s side window switch bezel.

Today, I will finally do the paperwork to get the title and plates, and maybe squeeze in a PA inspection.

This might be the last picture of her stock, before I start cannibalizing the "go-fast parts" off of my black ’03 GT. :D
