I have been looking for a nice Matrix/Vibe for a while now. I have a Durango that runs good but is rusting away and horrible on gas so not in the biggest rush. I came across an 04 one owner vibe at a dealer an hour away. I have another post below this with the details about that but now I am reading all this stuff about major issues with the 5 speed transmission?? Something about the bearing.. I am really debating about that car but this might make me skip it

What years have this transmission and was it fixed in later years? Should I just go with an automatic to be safe?? Thanks

03-04 have the 5 speed tranny issue. it is fixed for 05+. You can also bolt up a 6 speed just fine in place of the 5 speed. If the tranny is grinding, you should notice it during the test drive.

Can someone remind me what the 5spd issues were?

The early C59 bearings (first installed in '98 corolla) can't take the load of the larger '02+ Corolla and 03-04 Vibe/Matrix. This issue is fixed in 05+.
