A/C Heater Blower Problem - 2003 vibe

hi folks, i am looking for a bit of help. the A/C Heater Blower stopped 100% not working. i have read alot of the past posts to try to diagnose & fix the problem. no such luck to this point. i am a semi-knowledgeble hack at auto repairs. so lets see if i can figure this out.
1. turn fan switch to all settings, not working in any position.
2. turn distribution (left knob) to defrost, i can hear a/c compressor come on.
3. remove blower fan and jump start it, it works
4. new blower resistor installed, no change, still does not work.
5. checked 40amp fuse, its good, not blown. by sight, not replaced?
6. checked if new blower relay would solve problem, no change. thank you Pep Boys for the test, and not the purchase.
Here is the hopeful part, for someone with knowledge, ignition on, fan set to on, everything hooked up(blower, relay, resistor) , fan was hanging down when this happened. the fan blower flange grounded out to the vehicle and worked. surprised the heck out of me. it seemed to only run at one speed no matter which fan speed i had , but it ran. so, with that bit of knowledge, any idea of where i might look next for a problem. fan switch? wire hareness to resistor? a ground connection somewhere? any help at this point would be great.
thank you
