How can you turn off the headlights when it's dark out??

When it's light out and the headlights aren't auto on - I can decide if I want to turn them on or off,

But...if it's dark out - I have not figured out how to turn the lights off while the car is still running (we have only had ours since March)
Why??? If I want to turn the lights off then on - to signal someone - rather than flash the highbeams
I've always heard/used (at least at night)
flash the lights on/off for - go ahead
flash/hold high beams - NO don't go
