I don't know of any cars besides my 89 Bonneville and my parents' GP that DOES have an underhood light...hardly necessary IMHO...

i've owned 6 different cars/trucks, my family has owned another dozen. never had an underhood light. i think that's what a flashlight's for.

It's their subtle way of encouraging owners not to work on their own engines. "Real" mechanics have shop lights they can hang from your hood to illuminate the engine.Another reason there isn't usually a light there is because of the harsh environment under the hood. Extreme temperature ranges, vibration, and oil/dirt all kill light bulbs quickly.I don't miss having a light there either. A single stationary bulb would probably not be illuminating exacty what I wanted to work on. You can hang or prop a shop light anywhere you want.KSNeptune

ok my family has a 92 chevy truck an 88 jimmy and an 02 blazer they all had lights so i assumed most cars did. and when you are broken down on the side of the road by yourself and you wanna have a peak under the engine it's nice to haveboth hands free in stead of holding a flashlight but oh well i will live

Yeah, it seems the trucks and SUV's are still having underhood lighting installed as all of my dad's trucks still have lights - however none of the cars I've owned back to '93 have ever had them. Maybe more useful or 'utilitarian' for truck/suv owners to have them.

GM trucks used to have (not sure abut now) a really great detachable underhood light, with about 15 feet of wire. Rumor has it that a lot of them sprouted legs in the assembly plants, and GM had to buy thousands more than the number of trucks they built...
