Another passenger air bag inflator recall coming? (2008's)

FYI for 2008 owners:
The 2008 Matrix and Corolla were recalled today for passenger air bag inflators. It should be no surprise that this is once again for the potential of inflator rupture.
Previously the 2003-2007 Vibe/Matrix/Corolla models were affected. So with this news, surely the 2008 Vibe would be recalled as well. I suppose we will find out in the coming days - stay tuned...

Oh S H I T ..... does this mean in another year or so they'll recall the 2009's ?

I hope not. I don't want my Vibe to see the inside of a dealership for the rest of it's life

If the Vibe is recalled, go to a Buick-GMC dealership. I explain why in the "Problems & Warranty Issues" section.

No Tim, I don't think there is a chance of that happening. It was totally illogical that the recall stopped at 2007 models since there was no change in Toyota parts suppliers through the 2008 model year. As for 2009+ there is no evidence that either NUMMI or Ontario used Takata products in those cars. I'm pretty confident we're clear and free of dealerships.

I've gone through the recall loop twice for my 04 Vibe, as recently as 3 weeks ago...got another letter in the mail last week.

I know it's for safety, but it's getting old real fast.
No recall on the 05 Trix yet. Although, when we bought it we got a few of the SRS components (4 visits to the dealer) changed because of a constant (intermittent) airbag light.
That even solved the dim clock display.

Nope, not in the clear now.... Looks like you guys also have a Takata inflator in your 2nd gens.
1.6 million more Toyota vehicles added to the recall list.

2009 -2011 Toyota Corolla and Matrix; 2006-2011 Toyota Yaris; 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner; 2011 Toyota Sienna; 2008-2011 Scion xB; 2007-2011 Lexus ES; 2010-2011 Lexus GX; 2006-2011 Lexus IS.
Of course this is only in the highest humidity areas for now. So if you do not live in the states NHTSA deems highest risk, you have to wait until your area's recall date is met.

Perhaps GM should just recall them all at once - considering how few Vibes built compared to the Toyota models, why not?

I got a letter on my 08 a few weeks ago announcing the recall, but about all it said was that no parts are available and I'll get another notice when they are.

Well, let's not jump the gun just yet. I have not seen anywhere in the reports I've read that the Vibe is included. First, I do acknowledge that it would be very odd that the Corolla assembled at NUMMI right in front of my Vibe would have a different airbag supplier (Takata) while my Vibe was getting some other supplier's airbag. However, I would like to know if the Corolla was assembled anywhere else besides NUMMI? For instance, were some Corollas assembled at the Ontario plant where the Matrix was/is assembled?
Second, wasn't the Tacoma also assembled at NUMMI along with the Corolla and Vibe? Assuming that is correct, I don't see the Tacoma listed anywhere on the airbag recall list.

Apologies for jumping the gun, indeed we do not have any reports yet of the Vibe being affected at this time. I truly hope the 2nd gen is not affected as it is frustrating having a car tied up in a recall of this magnitude. It wasn't much fun being down a seat while waiting for an inflator and an available appointment to install the thing.
For your first point, the Corolla was also assembled alongside the Matrix at Cambridge. I suppose it's entirely possible the cars built there received a different part than what the Vibe would have received at NUMMI. Let's hope that is the case.
The Tacoma was built on a separate line at NUMMI. Looking at used parts, it has an entirely different inflator type than the Corolla/Matrix/Vibe appear to have, maybe even from a different supplier.
I'll keep an eye out for announcements on the Vibe.

Thanks CP. That is greatly appreciated considering half of the websites professing they have the "latest list" still list only the 2003-2007 Vibe as affected. Obviously all years through 2008 are. I am now more optimistic knowing that the Corolla was (is) also assembled up in Ontario. I'm sure the part supplier chain can vary greatly from one plant to another despite the same nameplate. For instance, when my Elantra Touring was assembled in Korea, there were three different OEM tires which could have been mounted on my car given what day of the week it was and whether Saturn was revolving around Mars.

Naturally I got the worst of the three brands and had to waste money replacing them before the first winter

I just read the Toyota May 23 press release and it states that all new affected Toyota recalled cars with Takata airbags are only on the passenger side. I'm thinking of calling the Toyota hotline to see if I can get some information from them regarding NUMMI versus Ontario builds.................just called. They are unwilling to answer my question unless I gave them my VIN. See ya

Thanks CP. I just got off the chat line with the Pontiac help desk and updated my GM Link page to let them know I am in a Tier (Zone) A state for the airbag recall. If the Toyota website is accurate and it is only involving the passenger side, I'm not sweating it out too much, although metal can fly in a lot of different directions at high rates of speed (like a grenade inside a tank). I do find it odd however that it would only be the passenger side. What did they use in the driver's side airbag: marshmallows and bubble wrap?
