Rear Hatch Lock

2005 base model Vibe.

Finally decided to see about fixing my seized rear hatch lock. It's only been about a year but I like to keep on top of these things. Turned out to be a relatively simple but very time consuming repair. Ton's of corrosion, lots of scraping with a small screwdriver, knife, dental tool and a couple grades of sandpaper. My hands were too filthy to take pics before but I got a couple of it disassembled so yoi can see all the bits.

I took my time, chatted with my girlfriend while I did it and spent about 3 hours on it.

I reassembled it with silicone grease on everything and stuffed every crevice with it to see about keeping the moisture out.

Give it a year or so, see how it works out.

When I replaced my original vibe with a similar used one, the hatch lock on the new one wouldn't open with the key. I only got one key with the car, and it was worn. disassembling and cleaning the lock didn't completely fix it, I had to file one of the risers int he lock so it would open with the worn key.

I almost never unlock the hatch with the key, the way the air flow is behind the vibe it seems like all kinds of road grime wash over the back, it seems like the seized lock ought to be more common.

nice pics

A year down the road and it still feels great. I stuffed as much silicone grease in the internals as I could.

I know this is an OLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLD thread but I wanted to thank the OP for the pictures. Gave me the confidence to take mine apart. Its FIXED. I had to remove one of the tumblers cause it was still sticking up. I assume since the car was rear-ended WAY back before I bought it that they replaced the hatch and never rekeyed it. THANKS AGAIN if you are still around.
