Vibe Transmission issue?

Post by motoxrcr »

Wife calls me today. The Vibe won't go into Reverse or Park. I get home, take the console apart and disconnect the shift cable. The shifter moves well without the cable attached. I open the hood and try to shift the trans into reverse or park manually at the shift arm of the trans. No luck past Neutral. I can hear a clunking sound when I shift it quickly via manual process. Anyone had this before on a 2003 Vibe, Automatic trans?? It is not a fluid issue. I regularly have the fluid and filter changed at a mechanic shop I trust. I supply the fluid and filter to him to make sure it is correct. The trans has about 240K on it but runs like a top and shifts well in all forward gears. It is NOT a slipping condition. I've had three Vibe's so far so I do have some understanding of what constitutes the condition mentioned and how to check this. I need someone who knows what else may be causing the trans not to shift into reverse or park, even manually.
Thank you!

If it won't shift manually, that rules out the brake interlock. Sounds like an internal transmission problem, maybe the linkage attached on the other side of that arm came undone.

Trans would have to be pulled and a choice made on repairing or replace.
At that age, I would personally lean towards replacing with a salvage unit.
