"Hey, your car's a piece of..."

On my way to lunch today, I was driving through campus in East Lansing, and someone in a newer Chevrolet Astro was driving by me. Both the driver and passenger couldn't be any older than 21 to 23. All of us had our windows down and as they were easing by me, I hear the passenger say out the window, "hey, your car's a piece of s**t!" So, in a moment of thought and almost laughing because of what they were actually riding in, I responded with "nice van!" My coworker almost fell out of the car laughing. The passenger then looked out the window then put his head back in and started mumbling something. All the while he was giving me a thumbs down out the window all the way until they turned. All I can do is laugh. I didn't buy this car for anyone else but me. And I think the mods I have done look pretty sweet and I get a lot of positive feedback from non-Vibers. It was just another butthead who can't keep their comments to themselves. It's not like I go past every Neon or Element and yell something out. Anyways, I still think that the whole situation was funny. If anyone else ever does something like this (which I'm sure they will), I will just reply with a "Thanks" and a thumbs up.

Someone in an ASTRO had the balls to insult a Vibe? That's just flat out stupid!

Kind of reminds me of a comment a moron made to me in my MGB one night about 20 years ago. A bunch of us were cruising/hanging out at the usual Friday and Saturday night places and this inbred m.f. yells out: "You ask me, that things a Japanese P.O.S." They were just jealous Aaron. It may (removed) you off at first, but you have to grin after you think about it. I wouldn't want to drive an Astro van either.

quote:thats something my friends would say out of sarcasim, just to get a reactionI have had that happen before. That's no big deal. This really isn't a big deal either. I just thought it was really funny that someone in the passenger seat of an Astro had the balls to say something like that. And it really didn't (removed) me off Mike, it was actually quite comical. I thought everyone here would get a kick out of it. I think I could have accepted it from someone in a Z06 or something like that, but not an Astro.

Aaron, you also have to remember what campus you are driving through. Something that that would never happen in Ann Arbor.

You seemed to handle it well. I would have said: "Hey, your mommy called and she needs her van back."

Not grouping all 18-24 year old in the same group, (Because I'm not) but some are just immature! There are kids that are just stupid, and really DON'T have anything better to do! I think it's low self-esteem, for many!

that's very funny. i went to the subaru/toyota dealership this weekend to check out the new wrx sti. one of the salesladies yells across the lot, "hey, check this pontiac out! it has a TRD sticker on the door! that's not a Toyota." she proceded to laugh obnoxiously and really (removed) me off. so, i yelled across the lot over to her, "well, that's because it's a Toyota inside just like your Matrix. if you paid attention to any car magazine, you would know what the hell you're talking aobut!" i then began to mutter a few things about what i thought of her.... then the sales guy showing me the Sti says, "yeah, they are very similar cars." i then proceded to educate him in the fine world of NUMMI and that no, they are the SAME car, just in a different package with better pricing (IMO). I think i may have called him a few choice things too under my breath, i'm not sure. so, i didn't handle it as well as you, Triton. way to keep a cool head!

Well....I think you handled it well! There were no body bags at the dealership after you were through? Educate them about the Vibe / Matrix!I love it when people tell me "oh yeah GM copied this from Toyota!"I always tell them "you got it, that's it!"Damn!

lol. thanks. i suppose you're surrounded by matrix lovers in Canada. still, the price didn't justify the funky looking body to me. i'll stick with my vibe, thank you.

A co-worker of mine makes fun of my car too. But deep down I know he kinda likes it which is what makes him mad. Therefore he must lash out at my car every once in a while to smooth his ego. The funny thing is is that he drives a rusted 87 blazer with a lift kit, so I get to give him crap about his "hillbilly" truck. Some people just can't seem to stand it when you have something nicer than them. You handled it better than I would have though, props to you for taking it above the 6th grade level.

I know what my reaction would have been to the situation... rev it to 6k and dump the clutch followed by a nice chirp into 2nd. Leave the Asstro sitting there wondering just how that little Vibe does it

Or you could have said "Your Mom told me over breakfast that she needs her van back by noon." That probably would have shut them up. But hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

Thanks guys and gals for all the great comments. Unfortunately, traffic was bumper to bumper so I couldn't put the hammer down and hit 6000 rpm, otherwise I would have.

This one time, I was driving a fleet Dodge minivan and this kid on a bike (must have been like 15 yrs old or something, yells at me that I am driving a piece of junk.I leaned out and yelled back, "nice bike". He shut up and rode away.

(removed) I would have settled that quarel with a good ole drag race. My friend had an astro before he got a new trans for his nova and he always did burnouts and squaks around my street for some reason. he always drove around the sub doing like 40mph. What is up with Atro drivers and thinking they are hot ****? lol. -=Paul=-

I've got a co-worker (really a nice guy) who unconciously snubs his nose when I mention my vibe. He's a Mercede fan, having owned one since he was in college and thinks there is no other car (except the Honda Van he bought for the wife and kids) that could be as good. But for his wife's birthday he let her pick out any new car SHE wanted to replace the van. She did all the shopping herself, and brought the car she bought by work to show him (and the rest of the faculty). It was a red Vibe GT.HE was a little red faced, having teased me about my car in the past (assuming Pontiac could never make a decent car). But by the next week after he had had a chance to drive it around some he was telling a different story. Now HE's a vibe expert, and "not at all surprised it was made by Toyota", since it was too good a car to have been the dreaded Pontiac.I just smile and nod in agreement.KSNeptune

That's great KSNeptune! Hopefully that will teach at least one person not to jump to conclusions about the Vibe.
