Squeaky Fan

Post by Dairgo »

So, it hasn't bothered me all summer; go figure, windows down, sun roof open, no need for the A/C.

But it is starting to get cold again, and turning on the fan, it seems to be making a little bit of a squeaky noise, not too loud. It can only be heard on the first level of the fan power, on others the noise leaving the vents is to loud to hear it. I've tried moving the vent to the different selections, and tried A/C on and re-circulate on. It can only be overheard on the 1st level of fan power.

I have a 2009 GT.

Anyone had this issue before or know how hard this would be to fix?

edit: if it makes a difference, the noise seems to be coming from the passenger side of the interior compartment, sounds like it's under the glove compartment.

Not certain about second-Gen, but the fan quit on my 2005 because of hung up brushes. Removing the motor and pulling it apart was straight forward. A drop of oil should cure the squeak for a period of time. The fan is located behind the glove box on Gen1's. Maybe a gen2 owner will confirm this?

Mine does make a noise, too. It's like a squeaky rattle; it's hard to describe. I can hear it on level 1 and 2, but past that it cannot be heard. To my knowledge its been doing it for quite some time. It doesn't bother me enough to do anything about it.

It's almost like, a flutter, like one of the bearings is bad in the fan or something.

it's almost like... think like pinning a baseball card to your bike frame so that it rubs on the spokes of the bike tire... that's almost the noise, but to a very very lesser degree in sound.

It bothers me... but I don't know what I would do... if I would be able to do anything to that bearing... or if I would have to just get a replacement fan, and if it's even owner friendly to replace (I'm not the most mechanical, I mean I can do brakes, oil changes, plugs and alternators, but ripping up the interior bothers me).

Sounds like you may simply have something stuck in the fan, a leaf for instance. Time to check the filter? My brother had so much crap on his filter it had collapsed under the suction of the fan. On a Gen1, pulling the fan is a lot easier than a brake job.

could be, I'll have to give it a look in the morning.

edit: looks like that will be stupidly easy to do. looked in the manual and while searching for a cabin filter to purchase, saw a youtube video for that.

Side note question: There's a replaceable filter that I can get AC Delco CF173, GM part# 19184673, or there is a washable/reuseable K&N VF2000. Has anyone purchased the K&N one?

10-7-14: Replaced the Cabin Air Filter, the old one was black death.... So there is that. Though even with the new filter I can hear the noise, I would say it almost sounds like a bearing on the fan. It's just the lightest of fluttering noise, that I can't seen to hear on video (mind you it's probably being over shadowed by the noise of my computer tower). Part of me says just live with it.. the other half says it must be fixed!

You did vacuum out the plemum, or try to reach to the fan to see it is clear of debris? Mostly I wanted to use the word plenum!

Strike one.... yeah... after getting off midshift the brain was not thinking about those things.

Will regroup and try again in the morning after another midshift.
