shimming a starter

I replaced the starter on my 2003 Vibe a couple weeks ago. All's good, except the new starter "whines" (that's the closest I can come to describing the noise in text) when it is used.

I've read this usually means the starter needs to be shimmed. Has anybody on the board done that? Is there a procedure to follow?

Thanks.

I replaced a starter on a Chevy V-8 years ago. The new starter came with instructions and a gauge to shim it. I haven't had to replace a Vibe starter yet, but I assumed the tolerances are such that shimming is not necessary. I would loosen the starter and try to change it's position a little or pull it and inspect it to look for a defect in new starter, rebuilt, I assume.

I wonder if a little grease on the cog would help.
