Vibration or rattle at 2700 RPM

Hello.

I have a 2006 Vibe with about 180,000 miles. I love the car... Aside from the rattles. Setting aside all the interior rattles, I have one metallic sounding rattle that occurs briefly at about 2700 RPM. It is a slightly higher pitch than the engine itself. It comes from the front end - I feel like it is lower front end. It has made that noise as long as I can remember - probably not as loud when I first got the thing. I asked at the dealer early on and they investigated and gave me the old "they all do that". I actually test drove another on the lot and it did make the same noise. I even went to another dealer to check a 3rd and it made the noise too. So, I just let it go.

If I accelerate hard it can only be heard very briefly at that specific RPM. If I accelerate slowly the noise lasts longer as I pass that specific 2700 rpm. If I set the cruise at about 2700 on the highway at around 75 mph it is a constant noise. It is like the engine vibration at that RPM makes something vibrate against something.

Any ideas on this?

Double check to make sure none of the heat shields on the exhaust system have come loose. It might just be a loose bolt on one under the car.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I'll dig out the jack stands and take a peak this weekend.

Some other things to check while in the air;

Sorry for bumping an old thread but I may have some help. I have a 06 with about 190k and had this rattle/vibration noise for about the last 50k miles. I crawled under myself to check shields, everything seemed fine. I took it to a shop, the tried for an hour to find the cause, nothing. Tried a GM dealer, no fix. Finally tried one more GM dealer and they took out a few bolts from the heatshield right behind the catalytic converter and replaced them one at a time. The culprit seemed tight on visual and touch inspection but must have allowed the vibration. My Vibe is like new for 6 bucks and an oil change, they didn't even charge labor. Try and go beyond just inspecting and get them to swap out bolts.
