I have a 2004 AWD Vibe that don't go no more.
Well, it goes forward gently, like it's in 3rd gear permanently or something.
So, I'm shopping for used automatic transmission that will drop right in with minimal modification if any. I hesitate to snag a tranny from one of those ebay wrecking yards, 'cause a lot of 2004 Vibes are ... old. Go figure!
Are there AWD transmissions from a newer Vibe or Matrix that will fit?
The car sits in my driveway with just over 200k. I did a head gasket there a year ago, so there's some dried blood under the hood that makes me slightly nostalgic about the car. Actually I just figure it's probably worth fixing. After all, it IS paid for!

They used the same automatic for the AWDs from 2003-2006, so any of those should work. I believe someone put an 06 into their 03 some time ago. But you need to make sure it's the MU5 AWD transmission, or you'll have made your car FWD on accident.

In 2003 and 2004 both the AWD and FWD cars had cable driven throttles. 2005-2008 were electronic throttle. This difference requires different wiring to the transmissions. Hence, you will need to find a 2003 or 2004 MU5 transmission for your 2004.

With that said, I have had good luck using Car-Part.com. Most of the sellers on that site, at least around me, are very detailed in their descriptions to ensure a correct part. Also, some offer a limited 30,60 or 90 day warranty. I found a low millage FWD trans for my niece's 2005 for $325 with a 90 day warranty. 5 months on she is ruling the road and her high school parking lot.

The 2005 AWD also has a cable driven throttle. Not sure if the 2006 AWD was cable throttle or not. So if it matters, you can look at 2005 AWDs.

The 03-06 AWD Vibes were all cable throttle based on the for sale pics I found. Only the base Vibes changed to electronic throttle in 05. And according to car-part.com, it looks like they are recommending that you use a 03-04 transmission in an 04, but when you flip it to look up an 06 model, they have transmissions from 04-06 as available. They all have the same transmission codes FWIW.

GT and AWD models were always throttle cable until they were discontinued in 2006.

You can get an AWD transmission from an 03-06 matrix or vibe and it'll fit.
